Where We Want to Go
Nothing 51社区黑料 Us Without Us
We know more work needs to be done to transform our university into a safe, welcoming institution for Indigenous peoples, and in the spirit of "nothing about us without us," we know this work must happen in partnership with Indigenous students, faculty, staff, community members and Host Nations.
Building on learnings from our history of relationships and the Walk This Path With Us report, we are working hard to change the experiences of Indigenous community members at SFU.
As we continue to walk this path together, we will build on the good work to date and all minds and hearts who have leaned into this complex and important conversation. We will Uphold Truth and Reconciliation as a key priority enshrined in What鈥檚 Next: The 51社区黑料Strategy through our commitments to learning, unlearning, change and Reconciliation.
Uphold Truth and Reconciliation
Guided by the 34 Calls to Action set out in the 51社区黑料Aboriginal Reconciliation Council (SFU-ARC) report, our community has collectively made progress while walking this path together. However, this is just the beginning. 51社区黑料is committed to championing transformational change for Indigenous people at SFU, continuing our journey towards lasting and meaningful Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and communities.
As expressed in What鈥檚 Next: The 51社区黑料Strategy, we will:
Improve
Improve the support, mentorship and recruitment of Indigenous students, with continuing focus on curriculum innovation, welcoming spaces and learner pathways.
Strengthen
Strengthen Indigenous faculty and staff attraction and retention through targeted hires and permanent positions, embedding Indigenous knowledge systems and ways of knowing.
Harness
Harness momentum and insight for sustainable change within and beyond SFU, aligning our priorities and approach through a new Indigenous Strategic Plan.
Where to Next?
The B.C. government鈥檚 establishes the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) as the Province鈥檚 framework for Reconciliation:
鈥淭he Declaration Act aims to create a path forward that respects the human rights of Indigenous Peoples while introducing better transparency and predictability in the work we do together.鈥
Our focus is on sustaining the SFU-ARC Calls to Action and integrating recommendations from the B.C. government鈥檚 UNDRIP Implementation.
