Brooke McNeil Receives the Governor General Gold Medal

The Department of Chemistry is delighted to congratulate Brooke McNeil on receiving the , one of the most prestigious academic honours bestowed upon graduate students in Canada.

Brooke is a graduate student in the Ramogida Lab, and this remarkable achievement recognizes outstanding academic excellence at the graduate level. It also speaks to the exceptional quality of research being done here at 51社区黑料Chemistry, and we couldn't be more proud to have such a talented and dedicated student representing our department.

We sat down with Brooke to hear more about what this award means, the path that led to this work, and what lies ahead.

What does receiving the Governor General's Gold Medal mean to you and your future research?

To me, receiving the Governor General's Gold Medal gives recognition to the years of dedication, scientific curiosity, and perseverance I demonstrated throughout my academic journey. It also reminds me of the amazing mentorship, collaboration, and support I had throughout my PhD that made my success possible. As I begin my postdoctoral fellowship at TRIUMF, receiving this award encourages me to keep pursuing novel research to help push the boundaries of what targeted radionuclide therapy can achieve.

What led you to pursue research in radiopharmaceuticals?

I was drawn to radiopharmaceutical research because of how interdisciplinary the field is and how much of an impact it can have on cancer diagnosis and treatment. As an academic, I love that in this field, when working to solve a problem, you are often integrating concepts from chemistry, biology, and physics at the same time and I find it very rewarding to see how these different fields of science can come together. However, as someone who has seen first hand how detrimental the side effects of traditional cancer treatments can be, to be a researcher in a very translational field that has the potential to change the patient experience is very motivating.

Where do you hope to take your research in the future?

In the future, I hope to contribute to the development of next-generation radiopharmaceuticals that are safer, more effective, and more accessible for patients. My immediate focus is on pediatric cancers, where there is a strong need for therapies that can effectively treat disease while minimizing long-term side effects in young patients. I also want to focus on further developing in vitro assays that can be used to identify which novel drugs may be the most promising before advancing them to in vivo studies to get more promising candidates into the clinic to achieve better therapeutic outcomes. I also hope to help expand access to radiopharmaceuticals through collaboration between research institutions, hospitals, and isotope production facilities.
