EDI Chemistry Hosts Events Supporting Women in Chemistry
This year, the Department of Chemistry鈥檚 Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Group hosted two successful events that celebrated, supported, and strengthened the contributions of women in chemistry across different career stages.
Jumpstart Your Academic Career Workshop
On August 25, participants attended Jumpstart Your Academic Career, a full-day professional development workshop designed to support women in chemistry that aspire to pursue academic careers. The workshop brought together graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career researchers for a day focused on building practical skills and fostering confidence.
Sessions during the daylong event focused on academic CV development, drafting teaching and research statements, the importance of EDI, and panel discussions with experienced academics who shared candid insights into navigating the academic job market. The interactive format encouraged discussion, mentorship, and connection, creating an engaging and supportive learning environment. Feedback from participants highlighted the value of such events and the EDI group hopes to present the workshop again in the near future.
Women in Chemistry at the Forefront: Poster Session
Building on the momentum of the workshop that they hosted, the EDI Chemistry group ran the Women in Chemistry at the Forefront: Poster Session on November 14 in the Chemistry Atrium.
The event showcased outstanding chemistry-related research by women scientists, notably graduate students and several faculty members, in our department and within the larger science faculty. The poster session created a space for scientific exchange while celebrating the breadth and excellence of research conducted by women in the department. Undergraduate students were encouraged to join the poster session and engage directly with presenters, learning about diverse research areas, and seeing firsthand the many paths available within chemistry.
These two events reflect EDI Chemistry鈥檚 ongoing commitment to promote an inclusive, supportive, and inspiring departmental culture that will strengthen our community.
The Department of Chemistry would like to extend its thanks to the EDI Chemistry Group, organizers, presenters, panelists, and all of the participants who contributed to the success of these events.
