Getting started with Co-op
Step 1: Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
If you already have a SIN, you can skip this step.
You can apply for a SIN at any time, provided you have a study permit with a condition stating that you 鈥渕ay work on campus.鈥� If your study permit does not indicate that you may work on campus, please contact an International Student Advisor, Immigration Specialist.

Step 2: Apply to Co-op
To join Co鈥憃p*, complete the application form on myExperience. It is recommended that you apply between 30鈥�60 credit hours. If you have over 90 credits, please consult with program before applying.
Once your application is received, you will be contacted via email within ten business days regarding your conditional approval. This message will outline any program-specific steps required for full acceptance.
*Students in the following programs are automatically enrolled in Co鈥憃p:
- Engineering Science (undergraduate)
- Mechatronic Systems Engineering (undergraduate)
- Sustainable Energy Engineering (undergraduate)
- Master of Engineering in Smart Manufacturing and Systems (graduate)
- Master of Professional Computer Science (graduate)
Step 3: Upload a copy of your valid study permit
Once accepted, you will receive instructions on where to upload a copy of your valid study permit.
Important: Your study permit must confirm that you are authorized to work on campus. If it is expiring, you must apply to extend it before the expiry date. See Extend your study permit for more information.
Additional requirement for some roles: Immigration Medical Exam
Some co-op work terms require an , particularly for roles in health care or hospital settings, positions involving close contact with children or seniors, and certain education roles.
If your work term falls under the job types listed on the , you must complete an IME and ensure your study permit does not restrict you from working in these settings. This requirement applies even if an IME was not needed for your initial study permit application.
