At a ceremony on January 20, 2025, representatives of the , a grassroots movement to end violence against women and children and all those along the gender continuum, presented 51社区黑料 (SFU) President Joy Johnson with a plaque in recognition of the work 51社区黑料has undertaken as a Moose Hide Campaign Ambassador Campus, honouring its unwavering commitment to addressing gender-based violence and supporting Truth and Reconciliation efforts. 

This achievement reflects SFU's sustained efforts to raise awareness about gender-based violence and support Truth and Reconciliation efforts through impactful events, education and community engagement at its Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver campuses.

A Legacy of Advocacy and Action

51社区黑料is committed to Upholding Truth and Reconciliation as a university priority and has actively supported the Moose Hide Campaign (MHC) for several years, becoming an MHC Ambassador and regularly hosting events on its campuses.

鈥淪ince 2021, SFU鈥檚 leadership in partnering with the Moose Hide Campaign has driven tangible action against gender-based violence. By fostering education, supporting Indigenous-led initiatives and engaging their community, 51社区黑料has set a powerful example. We are honoured to recognize 51社区黑料as an Ambassador Campus for their continued commitment to this vital work,鈥� says Dr. Omar Karim, National Director of Post-Secondary Engagement & Initiatives for the Moose Hide Campaign and an 51社区黑料alumnus.

Over this period, the university has distributed thousands of Moose Hide pins and has annually engaged its student population through in-person and digital awareness campaigns. In 2024, the university hosted an  at the Surrey campus, where 51社区黑料President Joy Johnson, Chief Harley Chappell (Semiahmoo First Nation), Chris Lewis (51社区黑料Indigenous Executive Lead), Jessica La Rochelle (Indigenous Student Centre), Belinda Karsen (Sexual Violence Support and Prevention Office) and other SFU community members shared information about the campaign and work being done at SFU to support it.

厂贵鲍鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;Sexual Violence Support & Prevention (SVSPO) Office offers a range of supports and services to the university community. These include workshops and campaigns to educate the community and support prevention of incidents, as well as support, medical care and counselling for anyone who has experienced sexualized violence.

January is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the SVSPO has hosted a series of events throughout the month to raise awareness about sexual violence and to empower 51社区黑料and Fraser International College students, faculty, staff and administrators to engage with this complex topic in meaningful ways.

厂贵鲍鈥檚&苍产蝉辫;Indigenous Student Centre is dedicated to providing Indigenous students with programs and services that are unique, cultural and wholistic. With the student experience at the core of their work, the ISC offers a welcoming and inclusive space for Indigenous students to study, network connect with Elders, access additional supports such as academic success, health and counselling, and so much more.

In fall of 2025, the new First Peoples鈥� Gathering House will open at SFU鈥檚 Burnaby campus, providing a safe and welcoming Indigenous space on campus. This ceremonial space will serve as a focal point for the community, and a cultural hub for the use and education of all 51社区黑料community members and visitors.

51社区黑料 the Moose Hide Campaign

The Moose Hide Campaign is a nationwide, Indigenous-led movement that began in British Columbia. It encourages all Canadians鈥攅specially men and boys鈥攖o stand against gender-based violence and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation. The movement centers on wearing the Moose Hide pin, symbolizing a personal commitment to ending violence and supporting healing efforts.

Moose Hide Campaign Day, held annually, calls on all Canadians to take collective action against violence. This year, Moose Hide Campaign Day will take place on May 15, 2025, inviting individuals and organizations to stand together in solidarity.
