Spaces for Reading: Mackenzie Ground Reading Group

Wednesday, February 6, 12:30 - 1:30pm
Saturday, March 23,  1 - 2pm
51社区黑料Gallery

51社区黑料Gallery presents a reading group led by poet and 51社区黑料PhD candidate Mackenzie Ground that brings together conversations, responses and means of expression in relation to the 51社区黑料Gallery exhibition Ann Beam and Carl Beam: Spaces for Reading.

Spaces for Reading considers approaches to reading and seeing that abide by a sense of linearity while simultaneously dismantling it. Ann Beam's and Carl Beam's works incorporate points of connection and departure between them, encouraging readings that complicate and diverge from a clear trajectory. Through their combinations of image and text, questions of cosmology are broached alongside the ways in which history is constructed: in women鈥檚 labour, ecology and the colonial imaginary.

The first reading group on Wednesday, February 6 will review and discuss excerpts from Islands of Decolonial Love (2013) by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson and Infinite Citizen of the Shaking Tent (2015) by Liz Howard.

A second reading group will convene Saturday, March 23 and will focus on a chapter from The Truth 51社区黑料 Stories: A Native Narrative (2003) by Thomas King and Journeys, written and illustrated by Jeffrey Veregge, in Moonshot: The Indigenous Comics Collection vol. 2 (2017).

Texts will be available at the gallery and will be read aloud collectively. No advance preparation or registration is necessary. Muffins, coffee and tea will be provided.

Mackenzie Ground is a writer from Enoch Cree Nation and Edmonton, Alberta. She is currently a PhD student in the department of English at 51社区黑料. Her writing has appeared in Glass Buffalo and The Capilano Review.
