Enhancing mobility and independence using power assist add-ons in wheelchair design

Incorporating power-assist add-ons for manual wheelchairs can significantly improve the quality of life, autonomy, and ability for adults relying on this mobility aid, especially to age in place.

Researchers from SFU, BCIT, and UBC recently conducted a scoping review titled which examined studies on the use of power-assist devices (PADs) in manual wheelchairs. The review assesses their effectiveness, identifies gaps in current research, and highlights the need for further research into PADs for aging users.

Manual wheelchairs are a widely used mobility aid that promotes independence. However, factors such as accessibility, uneven terrain, poor weather conditions, long distances, and physical or cognitive limitations can hinder the mobility of adults and older adults.

Recent advancements in add-on technologies have led to the development of power-assist devices for manual wheelchairs that can help to overcome these barriers. The scoping review identifies key findings from multiple studies, illustrating how these technologies can enhance mobility and functionality, especially for older adults. These studies also underline the need for more research into specific areas where power-assist devices are most beneficial.

Power-assist technology holds considerable potential for improving mobility, but the review highlights that, to maximize these benefits, it is crucial to understand user attitudes, address safety concerns, follow industry standards, and take a user-centered approach to design. Continued research is essential to refine these technologies, improve training protocols, and enhance accessibility. The broader societal impact, particularly in terms of community inclusion and accessibility for individuals with mobility impairments, also emerges as a significant theme.
