Many generations of New Zealanders grew up believing myths about the Moriori people, primarily that they were an inferior, pre-Maori race driven from New Zealand to seek refuge in the Chatham Islands. This misinformation was perpetuated by New Zealand's School Journals, a magazine-style educational series used throughout the country's primary schools.
In 2010, our partners at the Hokotehi Moriori Trust were involved in the development of a series of new School Journals, published by the Ministry of Education, that would give children a more accurate picture of Moriori life, history and culture.
Though the journals are not yet publicly available, supplementary educational materials for teachers can be accessed on .
