Interests

Indigenous Language Pedagogies; Indigenous Language Revitalization; Haida language, particularly X瘫aad Kil (Northern/Old Massett dialect); Indigenous language immersion; Indigenous Research Methodology; Indigenous History; Intersections between Indigenous language, health and wellness, and land protection.

Biography

Jask瘫waan is a Haida language educator and advocate from G瘫aw Tlage虂e (Massett), Haida Gwaii. Jask瘫waan鈥檚 research looks to provide pathways for Indigenous communities to strengthen their Indigenous languages. Her dissertation 鈥X瘫aad K铆hlga Tl'a G煤usuugiigangsaang: A Haida Research Framework for Learning X瘫aad Ki虂l鈥 aims to provide a pathway for specialized Massett Haida language immersion guided by Haida community, laws, and values. 

Jask瘫waan has contributed to Haida language programming since 2007 and has taught multi-level language classes to community learners since 2015. Jask瘫waan's work includes translation and transcription of X瘫aad Ki虂l as well as resource and curriculum development. Since 2017, Jask瘫waan has taught for the Haida Gwaii Institute (UBC Department of Forestry). Classes include Indigenous Perspectives of History, and Language and Cultural Continuity.
