More than two in five people in Canada will be diagnosed with cancer, but advancements in treatment are helping more people with certain types of cancer survive past the five-year mark.

鈥淟ung cancer survival in Canada has more than doubled in the past 30 years, with 27 per cent of people now living at least five years after diagnosis,鈥� says Helen McTaggart-Cowan, assistant professor of professional practice in health sciences. 鈥淭hese gains are thanks to earlier detection, better screening programs, advances in surgery, radiation, and targeted therapies, and a growing focus on personalized care.鈥�

According to Statistics Canada, the five-year net survival rates from 1992-94 to 2019-21 also jumped significantly for liver cancer (from nine per cent to 24 per cent), pancreatic cancer (from five per cent to 12 per cent), acute myeloid leukemia (from 12 per cent to 28 per cent), myeloma (from 27 per cent to 54 per cent), chronic myeloid leukemia (from 35 per cent to 61 per cent), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (from 48 per cent to 71 per cent) and cancer of the small intestine (from 39 per cent to 61 per cent).
