Ethnicity, Conflict and Insurgency POL 434W (4)
Intrastate ethnic conflict around the world with particular focus on ethnic conflict, insurgency and vigilantism. Begins with an overview of the causes of insurgencies and rebellions, including the impact of colonial legacies and effects on governance. Moves on to militia movements and vigilantism and other Non-State Armed Actors, including the type of violence they conduct and their linkages with the State. Prerequisite: POL 201 and eight upper division units in political science or permission of the department. Students with credit for POL 438 under the title "Ethnic Conflict, Insurgency" and POL 338W may not take this course for further credit. Writing.
