Dual Degree Program Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws | Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ Calendar | Fall 2026
SFU-Exeter Accelerated Law Dual Degree Program (Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws)
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers the SFU-Exeter accelerated law dual degree program (ALP) in partnership with the University of Exeter in England. The program leads to the awarding of two degrees – a bachelor of arts (BA) from 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ and a bachelor of laws (LLB) from the University of Exeter.
Admission Requirements
Secondary school students apply for direct admission to the SFU-Exeter accelerated law dual degree program (ALP) selecting one of the available FASS majors. Admission is competitive and enrollment maximums are in place based on the mutual agreement of FASS and the University of Exeter. Minimum admission requirements may vary from year to year depending upon the number of applications. Access to the program on the basis of internal or external transfer will be determined by ALP program leadership on an annual basis and processes for application and admission will be detailed on the ALP website.
The program begins each fall term. Applicants from secondary school must apply to begin in the fall.
ALP students who remain in good standing upon completion of 60 units at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏwill normally be automatically admitted to the University of Exeter’s LLB degree program upon application. To ensure admission to Exeter, students should complete 60 units by the end of the spring term prior to the fall in which they wish to enroll at Exeter.
Continuation Requirements
Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 to remain in good standing in the ALP. Students whose CGPA falls below 3.0 after completing 30 units will be placed on probation. Students on probation who do not raise their CGPA to at least a 3.0 by the conclusion of the following term will be removed from the ALP.
Program Overview
Students complete a six-year curriculum starting with 60 units of course work, as specified in the calendar entry for their declared ALP major, over their first two years enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at SFU. Students then travel to the University of Exeter to complete the LLB degree in the subsequent three years. Students return to 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏfor a sixth year to finish their BA by completing 30 units of course work, including the certificate in foundations of Canadian law. Students will receive 30 units of credit from their course work at Exeter.
Canada’s National Committee on Accreditation requires that students earning an LLB and wishing to practice law in Canada meet the following requirements in order to avoid further required course work beyond the certificate specified above upon completion of the LLB:
- All 360 units taken at the University of Exeter must be law courses.
- Students must complete the Exeter LLB program with a degree classification of 2.2 or above to meet NCA requirements.
- NCA assessment policy requires all applicants to complete their legal studies through in-person instruction.
Program Requirements
Students complete a minimum of 90 units as part of the 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏALP program, including the certificate in foundations of Canadian law. An additional 30 units of ALP credit will be awarded upon completion of the Exeter LLB and can be used towards completion of the 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏALP BA program. Students must complete all requirements for the ALP BA degree program for which they have declared.
ALP students complete a modified set of WQB requirements. ALP students will have six units of B-Hum or B-Soc requirements waived, depending on their declared major. In addition, course work completed at Exeter and counted as credit toward the 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏBA will be considered to meet six units of undesignated breadth and three units of B-Hum or B-Soc requirements, depending upon the student’s declared ALP major. ALP students therefore must complete the remaining WQB requirements: six units each of W, Q and B-Sci courses, and three units of B-Soc or B-Hum, depending on the student’s declared ALP major.
