Linguistics of Speech Science
This program is for students who are seeking an introduction to theory and research in the study of speech science.
Admission Requirements
Certificate program approval must be obtained from the Department of Linguistics. An overall CGPA of 2.6 and a passing grade in LING 220 is required for program approval.
Continuation Requirements
After a student has completed 60 units, a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of not less than 2.60 is required for continuance in the certificate program. Students whose CGPA falls below 2.60 cannot enroll in any upper division LING courses. After their CGPA is restored to 2.60, students must meet with the departmental advisor to redeclare into the program.

Introduces the scientific study of speech, focusing on the mechanisms of speech production and perception, the ways in which speech is described and analyzed, the relationship between speech and technology, and the practical applications of phonetic science. Open to all students. Students with credit for LING 290 may not take this course for further credit.

Introduction to the study of language acquisition from the point of view of linguistic structure. Prerequisite: LING 220.

Explores how language works in human cognition. Investigates how people produce and understand language (whether written, spoken or signed). Uses evidence from the production and comprehension of speech sounds, words, and sentences to introduce psychological and cognitive systems for human language. Prerequisite: LING 220. Recommended: One of STAT 201, 203, 205 or PSYC 210.

An overview of theoretical principles in phonology. Prerequisite: LING 220.
Introduces theories of sentence structure. Prerequisite: LING 220.
Explores language as a system of the human brain, including specific topics such as the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of language; language production, perception and processing; bilingualism, language learning and brain plasticity; and aphasia, dyslexia, deafness and sign languages. Prerequisite: 12 units of upper division linguistic courses. Recommended: One of STAT 201, 203, 205 or PSYC 210.
Note: Students who complete the certificate with a minimum CGPA of 3.00, have at least 90 units, and have completed one of PSYC 210, STAT 201, 203, or 205 may be eligible for direct admission to the master of speech and language pathology (MSLP) program at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, in accordance with an agreement between 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏand Canterbury. The agreement guarantees availability of several seats exclusively for students who have completed the requirements stated above. Transfer Credit
A maximum of six units may be transferred from outside of 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ toward this certificate.
