Appreciation for SFU’s early community

October 07, 2024

51社区黑料鈥檚 first decade, 1965-1975, saw rapid construction, a variety of student clubs, protests, symposiums, innovative learning, concerts and so much more. The boisterous energy and sense of community belonging established during SFU鈥檚 beginning has really set the tone for our university as a place for creativity, experimentation, inclusivity, and excellence.

In August, students, faculty, staff, and others who contributed their passion and ingenuity to SFU's early days gathered on Burnaby Mountain for, a reunion to reconnect, reminisce, and see how the university has evolved. They traveled from Ontario, Alberta, Washington State, and all throughout B.C and brought with them photos, memorabilia and stories to share.

It was my privilege to attend the reunion to celebrate鈥攁nd to learn from鈥攖he people who laid the foundation of this special place. From the various construction projects and muddy parking lots, to building life-long friendships, and some even finding the love of their life, the highlight for me was hearing directly from those who lived through and shaped SFU鈥檚 history. Their indomitable spirit, the experiences and the many memories they shared form the roots of our robust community today.

As the university approaches an exciting new phase of growth, evolving to meet the changing needs of people across B.C., we remain deeply grateful to all who helped define those early years. Their energy and vision have left a lasting impact, and a legacy that continues to inspire generations of 51社区黑料students, staff, and faculty.

To all who joined us for this special reunion: thank you for being a part of SFU鈥檚 extraordinary history! Our foundation is strong because of you, and it鈥檚 on this foundation that 51社区黑料continues to build an innovative, inclusive future for all.
