Pat Lougheed (BSc ’04, MEd ’12) began his 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏjourney blending unique perspectives while studying computing science and minoring in history.

After spending several years working for 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏStudent Services, Pat pursued his masters in education. In 2016, he founded Plaid Analytics, a consulting firm specializing in higher education data. As a member of SFU’s Alumni Council, Pat is dedicated to supporting student success and nurturing strong networks for alumni across Canada and beyond.

What is a highlight of your career so far?

One of the most fascinating and rewarding aspects of my career has been leading or being involved in policies that directly impact students' lives. For example, while at SFU, I worked on policies related to honors degrees and recognizing students for term achievements. It’s always meaningful to see students crossing the stage with those honors on their credentials. Starting my own business was another significant milestone. It was an intense whirlwind of learning, filled with challenges and new experiences.

Why did you now choose to get involved with 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏin this way?

After leaving my position as an employee at SFU, it felt strange not to be directly connected to the university for the first time in a long time. I wanted to continue that connection and give back in any way I could. Being involved in the Alumni Council is a worthwhile way to do that.

In your opinion, what are the benefits of staying connected to your alma mater, especially at this stage of your career and life?

The benefits are really around networking and continuing to see 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏalumni doing interesting and inspiring things. It’s fascinating and makes you quite proud to watch current and former fellow students, or athletes like the recent Paris Olympians. Just seeing the impressive range of achievements from people who studied at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏand to feel a part of that community is incredible.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to pass along to current students who are close to graduation or recently graduated?

Don’t assume that your career will follow your plan or any particular path. Be open to the unexpected because you never know what different opportunities might come your way!
