51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏAlumni Council Profile | Kulvir Kaila
Kulvir Kaila (BSc ’99) says earning his degree from SFU’s School of Computing Science was a launchpad for a career defined by innovation, exploration, and continual learning.
A Software Development Manager for an ERP Value Added Reseller (VAR), Kulvir has spent more than two decades navigating a fast‑evolving tech landscape. Looking back, he says it isn’t just lines of code that stand out, it is the places he’s traveled and the communities he’s helped build.
More recently, Kulvir’s connection with 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏhas deepened in a personal way, following the passing of his sister, Kuljeet Kaila, a beloved Vancouver broadcaster who fought a courageous battle with brain cancer. Establishing a bursary in her honour made giving back especially meaningful to him, and Kulvir says he is proud to continue that commitment as a new member of the 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏAlumni Council.
What is a highlight of your career so far?
The true highlight has been the opportunity to travel across North America, seeing firsthand how software shapes and strengthens businesses on the ground in different contexts. Being able to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, while watching the impact of tech unfolding, has been incredibly fulfilling
Why did you choose to get involved with 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏin this way?
After losing my sister, Kuljeet, I felt a deep desire to create something lasting in her honour. 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏwas a natural place to do that. Our family established the Kuljeet Kaila Memorial Bursary in Communication to remember her, celebrate her commitment to storytelling, and support the next generation of students following similar paths. For me, this is about more than philanthropy: it’s about ensuring that SFU’s legacy of opportunity, resilience, and community continues to flourish.
What are the benefits of staying connected to your alma mater, especially at this stage of your career?
I hold a deep sense of pride in where I came from, and 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏis a foundational part of my story. Staying connected allows me to honor that legacy, contribute to its future, and help nurture the same sense of belonging for those who follow.
What advice would you give to graduates or students nearing graduation?
The transition from student to seasoned professional happens in the blink of an eye. My best advice to the next generation is simple: slow down and soak it in.
Time goes by fast, so make sure you enjoy your university experience. Join the clubs, play the sports, and make special memories along the way.
