Dr. Jane Goodall

October 01, 2025

The Department of Archaeology at 51社区黑料 joins the global community in mourning the loss of Dr. Jane Goodall, renowned primatologist, conservationist, and humanitarian, who passed away October 1, 2025.

Dr. Goodall鈥檚 groundbreaking work with wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, fundamentally transformed how we understand primate behaviour, and our place in the natural world. Her observations regarding chimpanzee behaviour, including the discovery that chimpanzees make and use tools, challenged long-standing assumptions in both primatology and archaeology, and offered critical insight into the development of culture and shared ancestry between humans and other primates.

Though her primary field was primatology, Dr. Goodall鈥檚 influence extended far beyond. Her observations enriched archaeological understandings of early hominin behaviour, and her lifelong commitment to conservation and education continues to inspire scholars, students, and communities worldwide. We honor Dr. Goodall not only as a scientist but as a model of compassionate inquiry and ethical engagement.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, her colleagues, and the many individuals around the world whose lives were changed by her work and her words.
