New Board of Governors Chair, Deputy Chair appointed

The 51社区黑料Board of Governors has appointed Carol Herbert as Board Chair and Kamal Basra as Deputy Chair, effective November 28, 2025.

Carol Herbert was appointed by Order in Council to the Board in 2022 and elected Deputy Chair in June 2025. She previously chaired the Board鈥檚 Finance, Investments and Property Committee and currently chairs the Governance, Risk and Compliance Committee. She will serve as Board Chair for a two-year term.

Throughout her career as an academic and family physician, Herbert has served on numerous boards, both regional and national, often in leadership roles. She is Professor Emerita of Family Medicine at Western University and Professor Emerita of Family Practice at UBC. She also served as dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario for more than ten years. She is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, as well as the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the Order of Canada and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from Western University.

Kamal Basra was nominated by Order in Council to the Board in 2022 and currently chairs the Board鈥檚 Finance, Investments and Property Committee. She will serve as Deputy Chair for a two-year term.

Basra was the first individual in her family to attend university, earning a Bachelor of Science from SFU. Following several years of experience in scientific research, raising children and being a stay-at-home mother, she transitioned her career to finance and co-founded a wealth management firm dedicated to educating clients on financial matters. Basra has consistently demonstrated a commitment to community service, holding positions with the Interspiritual Centre of Vancouver Society Board, Raymond James Western Canada Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the Chief Isaac Group of Companies, among others. Her professional designations include Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute, Financial Management Advisor, Certified Financial Planner and ICD.D conferred by the Institute of Corporate Directors.

The Board of Governors also thanks outgoing Board Chair Paula Martin for her service throughout the years. First appointed to the Board in January 2020, Martin became Chair in June 2024. She brought her governance and business expertise to this role and oversaw a number of critical projects on the Board, including a renewed committee structure, representing 51社区黑料on the Canadian University Boards Association Board of Directors, changes to ensure the Board is aligned with best governance practices and enhanced Board transparency.

51社区黑料operates under a bicameral governance system with two governing bodies: Senate and the Board of Governors. The Board is responsible for the 鈥渂usiness鈥 of the university, including property, revenue and policies, while the Senate is responsible for the academic governance of the university.  Learn more about the role of the Board and its members here.
