Naiha Kaba has been involved in her university communities since joining SFU. Now, these efforts are being rewarded as she has been named the inaugural recipient of the Magnolia Spirit Award.

This award was created by School of Communication alumna Phoebe Yong, who graduated from 51社区黑料in 1988. She is the President of , a full-service marketing agency operating in Vancouver that she founded in 2004.

鈥淐reating a scholarship has been on my bucket list for years. It鈥檚 about giving students an opportunity to help them financially, as being a student is hard as it is today; and if we can honour their hard work in return, that is a good thing. The award is based on community service and giving back. I hope this can foster a culture of giving back and community service in today鈥檚 youth,鈥 says Yong.

The award is named to 鈥渓ift the recipient鈥檚 spirit, show enthusiasm and enjoyment in how we live, and convey who we are as an organization,鈥 she says.

The scholarship is a 5-year commitment from Magnolia, with 2025 marking its inaugural year.

Kaba certainly fits the criteria for the award and its focus on community service. At SFU, she participated in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science鈥檚 Peer Mentorship program, mentoring incoming students to help them transition into university life. After switching her major to Communication, she worked as a Social Media Ambassador, where she created content to promote School initiatives, highlight events and engage with students. This, accompanied with her previous community work in high school made her a great fit for the award, which will go towards helping cover her tuition costs.

鈥淩eceiving this award feels like a meaningful recognition of the effort I鈥檝e dedicated to my university community since my first year. Volunteering and being involved in school and student life has always been something I鈥檝e enjoyed, so being able to continue that in university, and to be acknowledged for it, is rewarding. I am delighted and very thankful to be the recipient of this award,鈥 says Kaba.
