Marissa Pimentel

EASC Undergraduate Student

Major: Earth Sciences, Geology Stream

What got you interested in Earth Sciences?
My interest in Earth Sciences grew from my love of the outdoors. Growing up, I spent many summers hiking, camping, and exploring BC. I was always drawn to science but struggled to choose just one field. Once I realized how interdisciplinary the Earth Sciences are and learned about the many career opportunities available in Canada, I knew it was the right path for me, and I haven鈥檛 looked back since.

What has been your best learning experience?
My best learning experiences happened during field work and industry internships. Applying what I learned in the classroom to real geological problems, which are often more complex than what we learn in school, greatly strengthened my understanding of geology. These experiences also made me more passionate about the field and confirmed that this is the path I wish to pursue.

What advice would you offer current/future students?
I would encourage students to attend office hours and build relationships with professors. Not only will it help with your learning, but professors can offer valuable career advice and mentorship. The geology community is very supportive, and the connections you build during your degree can open doors to great opportunities.

Have you completed co-op or other work experience during your studies?
Over the past four summers since beginning my degree, I鈥檝e worked in mineral exploration and geoscience research across BC and the Yukon. Much of this work took place in remote field camps, where days often involved hiking through rugged terrain and occasionally accessing areas by helicopter. My responsibilities included soil sampling, geological mapping, and core logging. These opportunities allowed me to develop strong field skills and gain several seasons of hands-on industry experience before graduating.

What are your plans after 51社区黑料EASC?
After graduation, I plan to work as an exploration geologist and continue expanding on my experience. My long-term goal is to become a project geologist, and I鈥檓 also interested in eventually returning to school to pursue a master鈥檚 degree focused on ore deposits and economic geology.
