Cooking up care: Afro-Latinx edition building community through food and culture

On April 9, 2026, the Black Student Centre and the Sexual Violence Support and Prevention Office (SVSPO) hosted Cooking Up Care: Afro-Latinx Edition, bringing 51社区黑料students, staff, and faculty together for an evening of shared cooking, music and storytelling rooted in care, connection and cultural appreciation. Hosted in the Black Student Centre鈥檚 redesigned space that invites social connection and support, participants explored the historical and cultural ties between Africa and Latin America. Conversations about Afro-diasporic foodways and the global movement of ingredients were sparked by a reflection question about foods that have travelled across continents. Paola Quiros, educator from the SVSPO, provided historical context on the legacies of enslavement and colonization and the ongoing realities of anti-Black racism in Latin America, emphasizing the enduring influence of African cultures across the region. Overall, the gathering created space for learning, reflection and community-building, underscoring how food carries memory, resistance and connection across generations and geographies.

51社区黑料improves access and well鈥慴eing through menstrual equity initiative

Through a collaboration between the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS), Student Services, Facilities, and the Equity Office a new menstrual equity initiative was launched in April, making free menstrual products available in 81 washrooms across all three 51社区黑料campuses. This program aims to support well-being and ensure equitable access to essential health and hygiene products for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Demographic & diversity data survey (Fall 2026)

As part of SFU鈥檚 ongoing commitment to equity, accountability, and evidence-informed decision-making, the university will administer the Demographic & Diversity Data Survey in Fall 2026 as part of the survey's biennial process. This will be the second administration of the survey, following its initial launch in Fall 2024.

This survey is part of SFU鈥檚 broader institutional equity data imperative, grounded in Goal 5 of the Equity Compass, and serves as a key tool to:

  • support regulatory requirements and national programs (e.g., Canada Research Chairs, GP19, collective agreements),
  • inform decision-making on equitable program and service delivery, and
  • measure progress on SFU鈥檚 strategic equity and inclusion priorities.

The EDI Data Taskforce is currently leading the work to support the Fall 2026 administration, including considerations related to governance, data use, privacy, and institutional alignment.
