51社区黑料is advancing its commitment to academic excellence through strategic, equity-focused recruitment supported by Special Programs
罢丑别鈥疭pecial Programs鈥痠nitiative鈥痠s a鈥痷niversity-wide鈥痚ffort鈥痑uthorized鈥痓y the鈥疊.C.鈥疧ffice鈥痮f the Human Rights Commissioner鈥痶hat鈥痑llows for limited鈥痟iring鈥痷nder certain conditions. It aims to recruit at鈥痩east鈥15鈥痭ew鈥痶enure-track Black faculty, 15 new tenure-track Indigenous faculty, 15 Black staff鈥痑nd 15 Indigenous staff.鈥
鈥疶he initiative鈥痠s designed to remove systemic barriers and expand access to employment for highly qualified candidates from historically and currently underrepresented groups鈥攚hile maintaining SFU鈥檚 established standards for鈥痚xcellence in鈥痑cademic鈥痑nd administrative鈥痟iring. It is used in specific contexts where this underrepresentation has been鈥痠dentified.鈥
The Special Programs initiative is rooted in two commitments 51社区黑料made in 2021: signing the鈥Scarborough Charter鈥痑nd passing a .鈥
鈥淓mbedding equity, diversity and鈥疪econciliation into academic renewal and workforce planning鈥痑dvances鈥痶he key priorities set out in the academic plan: strengthening鈥痮ur learning environments鈥痶o help us鈥痗reate more inclusive communities that鈥痵upports鈥痵tudent success and well-being,鈥 says Paola Ardiles Gamboa,鈥疭enior Advisor,鈥疎quity and Well-Being Initiatives,鈥疺P PEI.鈥
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences dean鈥疞aurel Weldon has been involved in several Special Programs hiring processes and emphasizes the link between diversity, rigour鈥痑nd excellence.鈥
鈥淭his program recognizes that鈥痽ou鈥痗an鈥檛鈥痑chieve academic excellence without drawing from the full pool of qualified candidates, so ensuring you are reaching a diverse pool of candidates advances excellence.鈥疻e also know that diverse research teams produce higher quality and more impactful academic contributions.鈥疶hese programs鈥痮perate鈥痺ithin the rigorous hiring standards we have always had at 51社区黑料while ensuring we are鈥痶aking advantage of鈥痶hat full range of talent鈥痑s we build our faculty complement and enable the formation of these high-performance research collaborations,鈥 says Weldon.鈥

Jennifer Spear, associate dean in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, says units do not鈥痟ave to navigate Special Programs searches alone.鈥
鈥淭here are strong supports in place, including鈥疘nclusive Excellence鈥疌anvas course, Faculty Relations鈥 facilitated sessions and the faculty recruitment guidelines. These鈥痳esources provide鈥痸aluable鈥痵tructure for navigating the process鈥痠n a鈥痶houghtful and rigorous way.鈥濃
罢丑别鈥Guidelines for Recruitment of Members of the Faculty Association鈥痙efine SFU鈥檚 standardized, equity-centred process for faculty recruitment鈥痶o鈥痚nsure鈥痟iring is transparent, legally compliant, academically rigorous, and aligned with institutional commitments.鈥
鈥痠s an online training resource that provides practical modules for committee members and chairs on topics such as bias awareness, inclusive recruitment and evaluation practices,鈥痚quitable鈥痙eliberation processes, and transparent decision-making.鈥
