Faculty of Environment Teaching Assistant or Tutor Marker Teaching Awards

The Faculty of Environment Teaching Assistant or Tutor Marker Teaching Awards recognize outstanding accomplishments by FENV graduate students in their teaching practices. One award will be bestowed annually, valued at $500, to be awarded as an honorarium.

Eligibility:

Teaching Assistants or Tutor Markers who are graduate students enrolled in a Master鈥檚 or Ph.D. program in the Faculty of Environment. A TA/TM can receive only one award in a two-year period.

Criteria:

Candidates should demonstrate excellence in one or more of the following areas for a particular course or courses:

  • Encouraging and supporting student learning
  • Introducing innovative pedagogical approaches to learning that stimulate student interest and understanding of complex material
  • Stimulating students to think creatively and critically
  • Fostering a supportive, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for students

Nomination Procedure:

The nomination package should include a nomination letter (max. 2 pages) accompanied by up to 2 pages of supporting documents, not including appendices. See below for information on supporting documentation. The nomination letter may be written by supervisors, department Chairs, or students, and may be authored by more than one person. Self-nominations are not accepted. Nomination writers are asked to focus on clear examples that highlight the candidate鈥檚 excellence in reference to the award criteria, and to avoid general statements about the candidate and their work.

The deadline to submit nominations is May 27th and the winner will be announced in early June. Nomination packages should be submitted as a single pdf document through the online submission form. The award will be adjudicated by the FENV Graduate Studies Committee.

Supporting Documentation

Supporting documentation may include a statement by the nominee of their teaching philosophy, excerpts from their teaching dossier, and other materials*, as appropriate.

*Please note that given increasing evidence of the negative impact of bias in course evaluations on women, visible minorities and other equity-seeking groups, a nomination package should not include numerical results from the Student TA Evaluations. If a nominee chooses to include student comments from the Student TA Evaluations, then all of the comments from the course should be included in an Appendix.

Any questions about the award or nomination process can be directed to the FENV Faculty Teaching Fellow, Tara Holland: tara_holland@sfu.ca.
