National i2I Network launches novel Commercialization Postdoc program to empower Canada’s next wave of Science Innovators

Burnaby, B.C. 鈥 SFU鈥檚 i2I Research & Innovation Institute has launched the Invention to Innovation (i2I) Commercialization Postdoc Program, a novel national initiative designed to equip postdoctoral fellows with the entrepreneurial mindset and innovation skills needed to bring scientific discoveries to market.

Funded through the $22.9 million NSERC Lab to Market grant, the program is part of the expanding i2I suite and will be delivered through SFU鈥檚 newly established i2I Research & Innovation Institute, which serves as the operational hub of the National i2I Network. This first national Canadian commercialization postdoc program was designed and developed in partnership with Mitacs to meet the needs of the Canadian science innovation ecosystem, and informed by a commissioned .

Starting in September 2025, the program will support postdocs working in deep tech sectors such as biotechnology, clean energy, sustainability, quantum computing / artificial intelligence, and advanced materials. Participants will gain skills in opportunity identification, market prioritization, intellectual property strategy, business model development, commercialization strategy and entrepreneurial finance鈥攑reparing them to become venture founders, industry champions or translational scientists.

The 12-month program is delivered in a cohort model, connecting fellows with mentors, incubators, accelerators and regional ecosystem partners across Canada. Supported through NSERC, Mitacs, and collaborating organizations, the commercialization postdocs are enabled to dedicate their full time to derisking their research-based innovation idea and to developing and advancing their commercialization strategy.

Burnaby (C.-B.) 鈥 L鈥橧nstitut de recherche et d鈥檌nnovation i2I de l鈥橴niversit茅 Simon Fraser (SFU) annonce le lancement du programme postdoctoral i2I Commercialization, une initiative nationale visant 脿 doter les chercheurs postdoctoraux des comp茅tences entrepreneuriales et des outils de commercialisation n茅cessaires pour transformer leurs d茅couvertes scientifiques en innovations concr猫tes.

Financ茅 en partie par une subvention de 22,9 millions de dollars du programme NSERC Lab to Market, ce nouveau programme enrichit la gamme croissante d鈥檌nitiatives i2I de SFU. Il sera administr茅 par l鈥橧nstitut de recherche et d鈥檌nnovation i2I, qui agit comme centre op茅rationnel du R茅seau national i2I.

D猫s septembre 2025, le programme accueillera des chercheurs postdoctoraux 艙uvrant dans des secteurs de haute technologie tels que la biom茅decine, l鈥櫭﹏ergie propre, la durabilit茅, les mat茅riaux avanc茅s, la fabrication, le quantique et plus encore. Les participants d茅velopperont des comp茅tences cl茅s en strat茅gie de propri茅t茅 intellectuelle (PI), priorisation des applications de march茅, 茅laboration de mod猫les d鈥檃ffaires et leadership鈥攍es pr茅parant 脿 devenir fondateurs de startup, champions industriels ou scientifiques en recherche translationnelle.
