Eldon Yellowhorn reclaims Indigenous stories through children’s books

September 10, 2025

51社区黑料 (SFU) Indigenous Studies professor Eldon Yellowhorn is using his skills as an educator and storyteller to share Indigenous knowledge with the next generation of readers.

Collaborating with co-author Kathy Lowinger and Annick Press, Yellowhorn has written several award-winning children鈥檚 non-fiction books. Yellowhorn says the Truth and Reconciliation Commission鈥檚 Calls to Action inspired him to create educational resources for Indigenous children and youth. 鈥淚 know when I was going to school in the 1960s, I never saw books like these about Indigenous heritage,鈥 he reflects on the need for quality books for young readers.

Yellowhorn and Lowinger鈥檚 latest book, Ours to Tell: Reclaiming Indigenous Stories, introduces Indigenous writers, storytellers, and creators, and was named as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection.

With a German publisher recently translating Sky Wolf's Call: The Gift of Indigenous Knowledge, Yellowhorn and Lowinger are receiving international attention. 鈥淢y target audience is, particularly, Indigenous youth, but I'm really glad that [the books] have had broader appeal,鈥 says Yellowhorn of the accolades he has received.
