Luutkudziiwus Historical Ecology Field School
Indigenous Studies Land-Based Learning Opportunity
INDG 435 is an immersive learning experience designed to deepen students' understanding of Indigenous landscapes, histories and cultural practices, as well as contemporary and applied issues. This field-based course emphasizes learning in land-based environments, drawing on Indigenous and scientific pedagogies of place, and combines academic study with experiential learning in the field.
2025 Field School
The field school took place from May 11 – 24, 2025. Through this experience, the students got out to the bush, camped, got their hands dirty, and supported land-based defense initiatives.
This field course was designed in partnership with Wilp Luutkudziiwus (Gitxsan) and was based at the Madii Lii culture camp near Hazelton in northwestern BC. The field school and community worked together to contribute to applied issues in the north.
Field school students gained hands-on experience in historical-ecological field methods, including, archaeology, GIS/mapping, ethnobotany, and Indigenous scientific pedagogies of place.
