Deferrals

In rare instances, a candidate might not be able to start the MD program in the year for which they were accepted. In cases of hardship or exceptional circumstances, they may request a one (1) year deferral of their admission to the program.

Anyone requiring a deferral of more than one (1) year will need to re-apply, and their acceptance in future cycles is not guaranteed.

Deferrals will not be considered for:

  • Supporting the completion of other studies
  • Supporting professional or personal development
  • Indecision on medicine as a career
  • Application to or attendance at another medical school.
  • Candidates who apply for admission to, or begin studies at, a different undergraduate medical education program in Canada during their deferral period will have been found to have acted unprofessionally and the deferral will be rescinded. We reserve the right to consult with other medical schools if a candidate is suspected of attending another MD program or if they have been identified as such.

Deferral requests will not normally be considered after May 31 of the year for which admission was granted, unless the offer of admission was issued after May 18. In such cases, applicants will have ten (10) business days from the date of the offer to submit their deferral request.

To request an admissions deferral, you must complete the following by the deadline:

  • Accept your offer of admission by paying the tuition deposit
  • Submit a deferral request to the Assistant Dean, Admissions via the Ask A Question form.
  • Provide supporting documentation verifying the details of the request

If you鈥檙e granted a deferral, you must confirm your attendance by April 30 of the year your (deferred) program begins. You鈥檒l then follow the curriculum in place for that cohort and must meet any new requirements for incoming students.

Deferral requests will be considered by an ad-hoc review committee, which will include the Assistant Dean, Admissions and two members of the Admissions Committee. If the circumstances of the reason for deferral genuinely prevented earlier submission, requests received after the deadline may be considered. For more information about deferral guidelines and procedures, please review the Guidelines for Admissions Deferral.
