Our Purpose
The MAE connects people with community, with archaeology, and with the tools of museology, equipping them to create pathways, meaning, and positive impacts in their own communities and future careers. We steward, research, and exhibit belongings from around the world with a focus on British Columbia. We also care for collections arising from archaeological research conducted by faculty, staff, and students.
Our Values and Principles
For, with, and by
We conduct and disseminate decolonised and community-based research, develop and share museum practices which support greater use and understanding of our collections, and champion the free expression of ideas in support of social justice and well-being.
Two-eyed seeing
We embrace a diversity of views and opinions, bringing respect for Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing in partnership with Western understandings.
Enquiry-based and Evolving
We focus on innovative methodologies of evidence-based inquiry. We stay current and relevant, continually updating practices and policies to align with new research.
We integrate technology experimentally but thoughtfully, looking to augment the visitor experience and pilot new approaches to interpretation.
Risk Tolerant
We create space for risk and trial, understanding that learning comes not only from success but also, perhaps especially, from failure.
Connection
We work with Indigenous peoples, in Canada and globally, to develop methodologies and practices that are culturally aligned with diverse worldviews and understandings.
Best Practice
Our global reputation is built on scientific rigour and research excellence, international research partnerships and engagement, and supported by a high calibre faculty and staff.
Flexibility
We research and interpret the newest ways of understanding, modelling flexible and responsive learning with a variety of partners and sources.
We understand that museums have traditionally presented as authoritative institutions of Objective Truth, and we seek to dispel this myth with frankness and humility.
Impact
We leverage our resources and platform in service of inclusion, equality, research excellence, and student, staff, and faculty well-being.
We enact policies and exhibitions that pursue or advance academic, archaeological, and museological distinction.
