How to Apply to the program

Step 1: Admission Requirements

Department Requirements

  • 3.25 CGPA (Academic transcript to be mailed to Faculty of Graduate Studies office)
  • A bachelor's degree from 51社区黑料or its equivalent from a recognized institution
    • while you do not need a sociology or anthropology degree to apply, you must have a strong background in both advanced sociological and anthropological theories and methodologies to be considered for admission*
  • Research interest related to a faculty member who will be willing to supervise you.

*Refers to applicants having completed basic introductory sociology and/or anthropology course work, as well as course work that would be considered equivalent to undergraduate sociolgocial and/or anthropological theory and methodology courses at SFU.

Language Requirements

Students whose primary language is not English must have a demostrated command of English sufficient to pursue graduate sutides.

International applicants will not be required to submit an English-language test if they have completed a degree at an institution where the lanaguage of instruction and examination was in English, in a country where English is the primary langauge

Step 2: Apply Online

Complete SFU's onlnie graduate application and upload the following documents ot the online application portal

  1. Resume or academic curriculum vitae (CV), including scholarly work
  2. A statement of interest (1-2 pages in length, clear and concise)
    • Succinct summary of your academic background
    • Description of current interests and proposed research direction, including research question(s), potential methods, and relevant scholarly conversations/references
    • Explanation of how your proposed topic aligns with department strengths and available supervision
  3. Writing sample
    • An academic paper written for a course, publication, or other scholarly purpose that you feel is an appropriate sample of your writing
  4. References from three academic referee
    •  Choose letter writers who can best speak to your abilities to research, think, and write
  5. All post-secondary transcripts
    • All applicants must upload electronic copies of their transcripts into the online application system. However, we only require official hard copies of your transcripts from applicants to whom we offer admission.

Finding a Supervisor

Please note that securing a supervisor does not guarantee an offer of admission. Applicants must meet all other univeristy and departmental requirements.

All applications are assessed individually and offers of admission are based on the strength of each application, faculty expertise and availability, and departmental resources.

MA

MA applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members who reserch interests align with their own. While you do not have to secure a supervisor prior to applying the program, there must be a faculty member available who has similar research interests and is willing to supervise you as a graduate student.

Contacting a Potential Supervisor

Once you've identified one or two potential supervisors, you should contact them by email.

Here are some items to include in your initial brief contact email:

  • Your name
  • Ask them specifically if they are accepting new graduate students for the coming academic year
  • Why you wish to pursue gradaute studies
  • Academic background (your CGPA must be over 3.25, or equivalent)
  • Academic awards or highlights
  • Research experience
  • Why the faculty member's area of research will match with your research goals (cite the faculty member's publications if relevant)
    • Make it clear that you are familiar with thier work and how their research interests mesh with your own (if there is a research idea in one of their papers that you would like to explore in your work, explain briefly)
  • A research proposal, if appropriate    

PhD

PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to contact faculty members whose research interests align with their own. While you do not have to secure a supervisor prior to applying the program, there must be a faculty member available who has similar research interests and is willing to supervise you as a graduate student.

Step 3: Pay the Application Fee

The full application fee is due in 7 days after your application is submitted and your application will not be considered until the full payment has been received:

  • CAD $110 for applicants with Canadian transcripts
  • CAD $150 for applicants with international transcripts

Step 4: Submit Your Application and Monitor Results

After you submit your application, you will be able to monitor your application's progress and outcome through the online application system.

Important Application Information

  • Please note that we are unable to provide information as to the 鈥渃hances鈥 of any potential applicant receiving an offer of admission in the absence of a complete application submitted through the proper channels (i.e. through the online application portal, NOT via email).
  • Applicants must meet both the minimum University admissions requirements as well as the admissions requirements for the Sociology & Anthropology department, and submit a complete application (including payment of the application fee*) to the online application portal by the deadline to be considered for admission. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Please note that payment of the application fee does not guarantee an offer of admission.
    • It is the responsibility of the potential applicant to determine if they meet the admission requirements prior to submitting an application and paying the application fee.
  • All applications are assessed individually and offers of admission are based on the strength of each application, faculty expertise and availability, and departmental resources.

*Requests to have the application fee waived or reduced will not be granted.
