Global Student Centre Events

At the Global Student Centre (GSC), International Services for Students offers an array of social events aimed at fostering connections among international students at SFU, cultivating an inclusive global community on campus, and celebrating intercultural diversity at SFU.

Who can participate in the GSC events?

Open to all 51社区黑料students, the GSC events are catered specifically to students from international pathways, including international undergraduate and graduate students, study abroad and exchange students, and any other newcomer students from outside of Canada.

What are the benefits of participating in the GSC events?

A key part of your success at 51社区黑料is in creating a supportive community around you. Our campus is home to students from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds worldwide. We're truly a global hub. Don't miss out on the opportunity to connect with your peers from all around the world.

Family Coffee Connect for Parents & Caregivers of International Students

Hosted by 51社区黑料Student Recruitment & Admissions and 51社区黑料International Services for Students, this event is free and open to families of international students.

While your student is attending Welcome Day activities, please join us at the Global Student Center. This is your chance to connect with other parents and caregivers, to ask our staff questions, to share stories, and also just to relax over refreshments.

Our doors will be open, so please drop by, even just to say hi and experience this dedicated space that has international multilingual students in mind.

International Student Welcome Socials

Welcome (and welcome back) to SFU! Whether you are a new or returning international student, we invite you to kick off the new semester with the International Student Welcome Socials. We are excited to offer special snacks each day to energize and cheer you on as you start the semester.

Our friendly team will be there to welcome you, share what events and services we have lined up for you at our centre, and answer any questions you might have.

You鈥檙e welcome to join any of the welcome socials that fit your schedule.

Meet, Greet, and Eat - Well-being Through Creative Expression

In collaboration with 51社区黑料Health and Counselling and the Global Student Centre, "Creative Collective" is a safe and inclusive space for students to hang out, meet new people, eat lunch together, and participate in fun and creative activities, including crafts and games. 

Creative Collective uses the as a guide, we explore different kinds of activities to maintain our well-being through creative learning and expression - however that looks to you.

No Material? No Problem!

We will supply all the materials. All activities are optional - you can enjoy doing crafts or simply hang out and connect with others. Registration is encouraged for you to receive reminders about upcoming sessions, drop-ins are always welcome.

Please note:

  • Refreshments and snacks will be served throughout the event.
  • You have the flexibility to come and go from the event anytime from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

Pop-Up Pantry

Global Student Centre is partnering with  to support students at SFU! Thanks to the generosity of Inlet United Church and Greater Vancouver Food Bank, many of the food donations, including fresh produce, will be available this term.

We understand that food insecurity can be a challenge, and we're here to help ease that burden. Join us at the Global Student Centre to pick up some essentials.

  • Free groceries will be offered throughout the event until supplies last.

Join us at the Global Student Centre for English Conversation Circles, a new program designed to help you practice and improve your English speaking skills. These sessions provide a relaxed and supportive environment where you can engage in conversations on various topics, meet new people, and enhance your language abilities. All levels are welcome!

FASS International Student Welcome & Global Cafe

Are you an International Student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) starting at 51社区黑料this Fall semester or in your first year or two of studies? This event is for you!

Come enjoy some light refreshments, music, discussion and good company!

Who you鈥檒l meet:

  • Members of the Arts Central team (Advisors and Engagement Coordinators)
  • Peer mentors and other international students
  • Staff from International Services for Students (Immigration Student Advisor and Coordinator, International Student Experience)

What you鈥檒l receive:

  • Get introduced to resources and services offered by International Services for Students (ISS)
  • Get to know the Global Student Centre (GSC) where you can connect with other international students to discuss and assist your transition into SFU.
  • There will be snacks, refreshments and some free FASS merchandise to take with you.

Co-op Info Session and Q & A with International Student Advisor

Join this session so you can learn how to plan for this opportunity and understand the benefits of co-op including how to manage your international student status and co-op work permit application.

Attend this information session to learn how you can:

  • Gain full-time and relevant work experiences before you graduate?
  • Get paid for your work while you apply your academic knowledge and learn new skills?
  • Maintain your student status in Canada while you work full-time for 4 or 8 months?
  • Explore and identify your academic and professional interests and strengths?
  • Build your resume, expand your network and obtain professional references for your career
  • Learn how to apply for a Co-op work Permit and manage your international student status

We will have a Co-op Advisor and an Immigration Student Advisor ready to share information and answer your questions as follows:

This session is open to undergraduate and graduate students across all faculties.

Co-op Info Session and Q & A with International Student Advisor

Join us with your questions about your current or upcoming TA work on topics such as support with teaching strategies, managing tutorials, dealing with tricky situations, balancing your workload, grading and giving feedback, managing your time, and so on!

We will share effective strategies and resources with you. This is also a great opportunity to meet your peers, build community, and expand your TA toolkit!

Attend one of our two Q & A sessions to:

  • have answers to the questions they bring to this session
  • know where to find further resources and support
  • have met other multilingual TAs and expanded their TA community

Facilitators:

EAL Consultants Eilidh Singh and Amanda Wallace from the Centre for Educational Excellence will be facilitating the session.
