51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ

Welcome from Program Director, Tiffany Muller Myrdahl

Welcome to 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏ’s Urban Studies Program, a vibrant, interdisciplinary community dedicated to understanding and working to build better cities. Our community includes remarkable undergraduate and graduate students, award-winning faculty and faculty associates, outstanding staff, and exceptional alumni who examine the hows and whys of cities and urban regions.

The Urban Studies Program prepares students for leadership in addressing the multi-faceted challenges facing cities today. We are a graduate training program with 20 years of alumni who have assumed a diverse array of high-impact roles —mayors, political strategists, senior planners, non-profit founders and leaders, development professionals, and other kinds of changemakers. In 2024, we launched a new undergraduate program in Urban Worlds. This program readies the next generation of thinkers and doers to understand and address pressing urban issues. Our curriculum at both levels provides an interdisciplinary, hands-on approach, inviting students to engage in cutting-edge urban scholarship and put theory into practice in our Urban Innovation Lab, one of SFU’s field schools, or in their co-op placements.

The faculty and faculty associates guiding these programs draw from significant social-science expertise and professional experience in critical areas, such as urban housing, sustainability, governance, mobility, Indigenous planning, equity, age-friendly cities, immigration settlement, urban data analytics, urban philosophy, and community-engaged research.

What is Urban Studies?

The comprehensive study of cities – in all their social, economic, environmental and political complexity – is crucial to a sustainable global future.

We train urbanists. In our two interdisciplinary graduate education programs, we aim to strike a balance between academic and professional training and to produce graduates who have the diverse and specialized skill sets, broad knowledge base and the flexibility needed to tackle today's urban challenges.
