Biography

Sarah investigated the magmatic processes preceding eruptions at the Mount Meager Volcanic Complex (MMVC) in southwest British Columbia. Through petrographic, geochemical, and diffusion chronometry analyses of four eruptions (two mafic and two felsic), her study revealed that despite complex recharge and remobilisation, the final pre-eruptive storage durations are relatively short. Olivine crystals from mafic eruptions indicate only 1-3 months of shallow storage before eruption, while felsic eruptions show magma bodies were episodically reheated and could erupt within years to decades after reaching a shallow reservoir. Her research identifies short pre-eruptive timescales and dynamic, frequently recharged magmatic systems, providing new insights into volcanic hazard models for the region and underscoring the importance of considering brief precursor windows in emergency planning.
