Biography
Yu-Yen focused on the integration of volcanic hazards into British Columbia鈥檚 multi-hazard management system, amidst growing risks from climate change and globalization. Through three interrelated projects, she identified key challenges and proposed practical solutions. The first project, focusing on the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, found that while residents are generally well-prepared and local governments understand necessary actions, issues like fragmented governance and communication barriers hinder resilience. The second project examined volcanic hazard awareness and identified a disconnect between expert knowledge, institutional readiness, and public understanding, despite higher-than-expected public awareness of BC鈥檚 volcanoes. The third project proposed a tailored Canadian volcanic risk management framework, advocating for better coordination, scientific advancement, and public education. While BC has strong preparedness foundations, the development of a Canadian volcano observatory and improved engagement between experts, stakeholders, and the public are crucial to mitigating volcanic risks.
