Getting Started

Grade 6

Do you teach Core French 6 or have students who are learning French for the first time? The units on this page are designed to build a strong foundation for students to gradually develop their French language skills. While these units align with the Core French Grade 6 curriculum, they are also suitable for students with limited exposure to French. Feel free to adapt the lessons to meet your students’ needs. Unit 1: Du lundi au dimanche - Nos vies occupées! Je peux expliquer ce que je fais et ce que d’autres personnes font pendant la semaine. - From Monday to Sunday - Our Busy Lives! I can explain what I do, and other do during the week.

In this unit, students will review key concepts from Grade 5. Then, they will learn how to explain what they and others do throughout the week. By the end of the unit, students will be able to describe their own weekly schedules for two different months of the year.

UNIT OBJECTIVES :

  • Je peux expliquer ce que je fais, et ce que d’autres personnes font. | I can explain what activities I and others are doing.
  • Je peux nommer les jours de la semaine et les mois de l'année. | I can name the days of the week and months of the year.
  • Je peux dire et écrire quand on fait nos activités. | I can say and write when (the day(s) of the week) we do our activities.

Unit 2 : Qu’est-ce qu’il y a dans mon sac? Je peux communiquer au sujet des objets dans mon sac à dos. – What's in my bag? I can communicate about objects in my backpack.

Unit description:

In this unit, students will learn to name and describe common objects that they use in the classroom. By the end of the unit, students will create a What’s in my bag? video to explain what is in their backpack or desk.

Unit objectives :

  • Je peux expliquer ce qu’il y a dans mon sac à dos ou pupitre. | I can explain what is in my backpack or desk.
  • Je peux décrire des objets que j’ai dans mon sac à dos. | I can describe some objects in my backpack.
  • Je peux expliquer mes préférences. | I can explain my preferences.

Unit 3: Camion gourmand! Je peux communiquer ce que je mange ou je ne mange pas pour le dîner. Je peux commander un plat dans un camion-restaurant. – Good truck frenzy! I can explain what I eat or don’t eat for lunch. I can order a meal from a food truck.

UNIT DESCRIPTION:

In this unit, students will explain their lunchtime meal preferences. They will also learn to order a meal at a food truck. By the end of the unit, students will design a food truck restaurant using an online tool, a physical model, or a drawing and label it in French. They will also create a menu for their mobile restaurant and practice ordering food from others’ food truck menus.

UNIT Objectives

  • Je peux expliquer ce que je mange. / I can explain what I am eating.
  • Je peux expliquer mes préférences alimentaires. / I can explain my food preferences.
  • Je peux parler des repas que je mange chez moi. / I can talk about the meals that I eat at home.
  • Je peux commander un repas pour le dîner qui représente mes goûts culinaires personnels. / I can order a meal for lunch that represents my personal culinary taste.

Unit 4: Fêtons ensemble! Je peux planifier une fête (et je célèbre mes intérêts). - Let's party! I can plan a party (and celebrate my interests)

UNIT DESCRIPTION:

In this unit, students will plan their end of the year party as a class. Then they will plan a party using their learned party-planning skills to plan a fictious party that represents their interests.

Unit Objectives

  • Je peux poser et répondre à des questions simples pour expliquer qui, quoi, quand, pourquoi et où se passe un évènement. / I can ask and answer basic questions to explain who, what, why, where and when an event is happening.
  • Je peux répondre à une invitation en utilisant les structures : Je peux/Je ne peux pas…. / I can respond to an invitation using I can/I cannot… structures.
  • Je peux planifier un évènement pour célébrer ce qui est important pour moi. / I can plan an event to celebrate something that is important to me.
