Gathering for Indigenous Health Research (GIHR) 2023
In June 8-9th, 2023 the BC NEIHR hosted GIHR on the traditional territory of Kitselas First Nation (Terrace, BC). While the previous year鈥檚 event focused on mentorship, this year鈥檚 event aimed to prioritize building and strengthening relationships with ICCOs. To support these efforts, BC NEIHR made an intentional choice to work in collaboration with the host community, Kitselas First Nation.
The gathering commenced with an opening ceremony with Chief and community members. Participants did a Canyon Tour on traditional territory with story, dance, music, cultural and land-based activities, as well as ICCO and Indigenous trainee health research presentations. A total of 57 people attended the gathering. Our Indigenous Health Research Facilitators were key in the planning and relationship building for this event and they continue to embody our efforts to build trust through Indigenous-led approaches to relationality.
Gathering for Indigenous Health Research (GIHR) 2022
In June 9-10th 2022, the BC NEIHR hosted the Gathering for Indigenous Health Research (GIHR) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) on the traditional and unceded territory of the Musqueam people to celebrate the launching of the BC NEIHR. There were 83 attendes including funded ICCOs and Indigenous graduate students, as well as BC NEIHR team members, and partners, gathered to network, share their knowledge and experiences.
The overarching theme of the gathering was Indigenous mentorship. Hosting this event allowed BC NEIHR to explore the meaning of Indigenous mentorship and prioritize relationality while building relationships and trust within the health research environment. Given the historically exploitative nature of research in Indigenous communities, this gathering was an important step in cultivating relationships based on Indigenous-led approaches to knowledge sharing and relationship building.
