Empower newcomer children as they navigate life in Canada!

The 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏSurrey - TD Community Engagement Centre works with the Surrey School District (SD36) Welcome Centre to offer support and mentorship to English Language Learners through the Young Pathfinders program.

The Young Pathfinders program aims to support newcomer English Language Learner (ELL) students in grades 5-7 succeed in school and develop positive connections through a range of academic and social activities while being mentored by university and high school students. Volunteers are trained to help students develop homework skills, communication, conflict resolution, goal setting skills and healthy relationships. 

Opportunity Description:

As a Program Activator, you will help develop games, activities and workshops for students in grades 5 to 7, and help them develop their conversational skills.

In this role you will:

  • Learn about the goals of the SD36 Welcome Centre programs and settlement supports in school for newcomers to Canada.
  • Apply learned knowledge of the Young Pathfinders program as well as interpersonal, communication, cross-cultural awareness and instructional skills by assisting in the delivery of program activities.
  • Apply learned knowledge of the program curriculum by coming up with new ideas for activities, or by altering existing activities to meet the needs and interests of the children attending the program.
  • Apply interpersonal, empathy and relationship-building skills by developing healthy relationships with the children in the program.

Program Logistics:

  • Mondays
  • Time:  From 2:45 pm to 5:00 pm
  • Location: Forsyth Road Elementary School (10730 139 St, Surrey, BC V3T 4L9)
  • Dates: Volunteers must be available to volunteer from April 25th to June 16th, 2025.

Volunteer Orientation:

Volunteers will receive training (via zoom) to prepare them for their role and on a one-on-one basis. 

Requirements:

Please note, students from other universities & colleges may apply, but priority is given to current 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏstudents (undergraduate, graduate, or continuing studies) and 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏalumni.

  • Provide the SD36 Welcome Centre with a copy of a Criminal Record Check (CRC).
