Research Interests

My main scholarly focus is writing: what it is, how it works, how people do it and learn to do it.

My research interests include second language writing; language variation, error, and ideology; academic writing and publishing; the globalization of English and higher education; and the intersection of academic integrity and academic literacies.

Most of my current research projects focus on students’ use of Generative AI (GenAI) to complete academic writing assignments and other writing tasks; I am also beginning work on a book about defining writing in light of the proliferation of GenAI.

A note on graduate student supervision: Because I have a teaching-focused appointment, generally speaking I cannot work with PhD students as sole supervisor. I am able to co-supervise with another faculty member if you are interested in working with me. However,  beginning Fall 2026, I will be able to supervise MA students as the sole academic supervisor, due to a change in SFU’s supervision policies, and I am looking forward to working with research-based MA students. The best way to work with me as an MA student is to already be an MEd student in the 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏFaculty of Ed and contact me with a research proposal.
