Faculty of Education and You: Lacey Pasemko

LACEY PASEMKO, A MATHEMATICIAN AND DIVISIONAL NUMERACY LEAD TEACHER.

Program: MEd in Curriculum & Instruction: Innovations in Mathematics Education

In junior high, Lacey fell in love with problem solving, gravitating towards mathematics. Looking back, she wishes she had a role model in the mathematics field to look up to. Today, Lacey strives to be that positive role model, as she combines her love for mathematics and teaching children.

On top of completing her education degree at the University of Alberta and a Masters in Educational Leadership at the University of Portland, Lacey explored education further when she was introduced to the MEd in Curriculum & Instruction: Innovations in Mathematics Education program at 51社区黑料through Dr. Peter Liljedahl, Faculty of Education professor.

鈥淲hen I found out that he was putting forward this program, I knew I had to apply because I believe so strongly in that entire piece of pedagogy he released into the world 鈥 building thinking classrooms. In the program he would introduce problems for us to solve that allow us to inter-change between the perspectives of students, teachers and leaders.鈥

鈥淚 now ask my students for feedback nearly every day. We find problems that they love, we solve the problems and then we reflect on the process.鈥

鈥淥ne learning from the program that I apply in my work today is that everyone is capable. Everyone can live in this world being a mathematician. There's a huge atmosphere of math anxiety in our world that I just really want to shatter.鈥

Recently, Lacey stepped into a new role as a divisional numeracy lead teacher. Her time in the program inspires her to think more expansively about her impact and how she can lead change beyond her classroom. She will be leading professional development and collecting data for the school division.

"As a school division we believe in innovation. We believe in weaving mathematics into everything that we do and making it cross-curricular, which fully aligns with the values of this program. I'm really excited to share my newfound knowledge and extend on those values in my new position.鈥

Dr. Nathalie Sinclair opened up a whole new world to mathematics that I didn't even know existed. Before, I thought mathematics was objective. But after having her as my professor, my perspective has shifted. It's crazy how much more in depth the subject can be.鈥

鈥淚 really believe that this program can make a powerful change in our teaching practice, schools and students. If more people were able to be in this program and collaborate with the amazing individuals you engage with, it would change math education."

鈥淚 advise students entering the program to take it all in and come with an open mind. It really does impact the way that you teach it. It changes your philosophy of what you thought you were as a teacher, while still keeping your values. I would have never been aware of the gaps I had in mathematics education without this program.鈥
