The Faculty of Education congratulates Dr. Amy Parent, Sigidimnak Nox瘫s Ts鈥檃awit, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Governance and Education and UNESCO Co-Chair in Transforming Indigenous Knowledge Research Governance and Rematriation, on receiving the 2026 YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the Reconciliation category.

This recognition celebrates Parent鈥檚 longstanding leadership in Indigenous governance, education, rematriation and reconciliation. Guided by Indigenous values and principles, her research supports Indigenous self-determination by strengthening Indigenous control of Indigenous research, advancing Indigenous knowledge governance, and creating pathways for communities, Knowledge Keepers, youth, matriarchs and rights holders to shape research, policy and education.

Parent鈥檚 work has also played a significant role in national and international conversations on the return of Indigenous cultural treasures. She led a Nisga鈥檃 rematriation delegation connected to the historic return of the Ni鈥檌sjoohl Memorial Pole, the first totem pole successfully returned from the United Kingdom. Her leadership continues to inform broader efforts to advance rematriation, decolonizing education and implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Presented by Scotiabank, the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards honour leaders whose work is making a lasting impact in communities across the Lower Mainland. Parent was among 13 women and one organization celebrated at the 2026 Women of Distinction Awards Gala on May 7, 2026.
