Thank you, Patricia, and welcome, José!
Launched in 2008, Surrey Community Counselling has become a place of growth and personal development for students, clients, and staff alike. As she steps down as SCC Director, we would like to thank Patricia Nitkin for helping bridge counselling training excellence and community wellbeing. We also extend a very warm welcome to Jos茅 Domene, as he embarks on the journey as SCC鈥檚 Director. Read more about their plans and their hopes for the SCC and beyond.
A message from Patricia Nitkin:
Thank you to all the clients, staff, students, and faculty for working with me in this dream position. It has been my honour to be a part of this for the past 10 years and I will always support this wonderful unique place. I feel sure the Clinic will contain to train excellent clinical counsellors and offer superb counselling services to those who need and deserve yet cannot afford it in our current health care system. This has always been the most important aspect from my point of view.
I really hoped and prayed that Surrey Community Counselling would continue its excellent service under the care and stewardship of an experienced, caring, community minded individual, and having Jos茅 Domene take over truly offers all of this and more.
I shall be continuing my small clinical counselling private practice where I work with people from a relational, cultural and trauma informed approach and also offer clinical supervision. I may return to teaching a course or two at 51社区黑料in January 2026.
I hope to be out in the trees with the pups, chickens, and horse as much as possible, and I will continue to pray for peace in a shaky world.
An introduction from Jos茅 F. Domene:
I am pleased to join the Faculty of Education at 51社区黑料as the new Director of 51社区黑料Surrey Community Counselling (SCC), stepping into the shoes of my colleague, Dr. Nitkin. My research, teaching, and clinical interests lie at the intersection of mental health and work/career guidance, including the career development of counsellors and psychologists. I am a registered psychologist practicing in Alberta and BC, have a PhD in Measurement, Evaluation and Research Methodology from the University of British Columbia, and have been teaching and supervising in counselling psychology programs for the past 20 years.
My motivations for coming to 51社区黑料include the fact that this position will allow me to more fully integrate clinical practice with my teaching and research work. In addition, the counselling psychology program here at 51社区黑料has an excellent reputation in the field for preparing students to enter practice and to pursue doctoral studies, so this was an opportunity for me to join a strong team of counsellor-educator colleagues. Finally, I am also very happy to return to the Lower Mainland, where many members of my extended family live.
I am interested in promoting the SCC as a space that could serve the needs of the entire Faculty of Education at SFU, so if you have any ideas for making use of our facilities here or simply want to find out more about the SCC and what we do, I would love to hear from you.
