Expanded identity options for students within 51社区黑料applications
Update: March 24, 2023
As we continue to follow the Provincial government鈥檚 mandate to provide more diverse gender identity options for its constituents, the next update to our 51社区黑料applications is to reflect the use of appropriate names within our systems, as this is an important way of establishing norms of respect with the community.
Beginning March 30, a student's chosen name (previously called preferred) will be more prominent than a person's official or legal first name in many University-related systems and downstream applications.
Please note:
- In some cases, a legal name will still be required for proper representation, identity verification and documentation.
- Information recorded within a go51社区黑料student profile is only used to update student records and its collection is consistent with the 51社区黑料Privacy Disclosure.
If you know of a student who may find this update relevant to them, please direct them to reginfo@sfu.ca for more information.

November 2022
51社区黑料has expanded the gender identity options available to students within our application system go51社区黑料(). These expanded gender identity options are consistent with the province鈥檚 undergraduate application system as defined in British Columbia's Gender Identity and Sex Information Data Standard.
As of December 1, current students can select man, woman, non-binary or prefer not to disclose as their primary gender description. This section will appear on student transcripts. A second section is also now available to students in which they can select cisgender or transgender. This second section is only visible to the student and otherwise only used for reporting, policy development and program improvement processes.
It鈥檚 important to note that the information recorded within the go51社区黑料student profile is only used to update student records and its collection is consistent with the 51社区黑料Privacy Disclosure.
As part of SFU鈥檚 commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, modernizing our systems and processes to provide more gender identity options for students is a crucial step.
To find out how to update your profile, please visit the Student Centre (goSFU) Guide. This update will be available to 51社区黑料employees at a later date.
