Could you tell us about your co-op experience at Easter Seals BC & Yukon – BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities – Camp Counsellor?
I worked as an overnight Camp Counsellor, supporting campers with disabilities in an inclusive and barrier-free environment. Through this role, I gained hands-on experience in behavior support, risk assessment, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Working in such a fast-paced and dynamic setting taught me the importance of putting myself in their shoes, understanding their unique ways of communicating, and providing support that truly meets their individual needs.
What did you enjoy the most about your experience there?
The most rewarding part of my experience was building genuine connections with campers and watching their growth day by day. Many arrived feeling nervous, but through activities like talent shows and outdoor activities, I saw their confidence and joy gradually since through. These moments reminded me of power of empathy, trust, and encouragement
Do you have any advice for students who want to get involved with co-op?
I encourage students to step outside of their comfort zones and explore roles that challenge them in new ways. You might discover hidden skills and strengths you never realized you had! Most importantly, treat every challenge as a learning opportunity and stay open to growth both personally and professionally.
