Aarthi S., 5th year Behavioural Neuroscience (B.Sc) minoring in Counselling and Human Developement
What are you currently involved with at SFU? How has this experience influenced your academic or career goals?
Since this is my last semester, I am primarily involved with the Behavioural Neuroscience Student Society (BNSS) as the SFSS Representative. In the past, I’ve held multiple leadership positions, including VP External for BNSS, Internal Events Director and VP Internal for UNICEF SFU, and VP Marketing for SFU’s Tamil Students’ Association (TSA). These experiences allowed me to develop strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills while creating a sense of community within SFU.
Beyond student leadership, I began working as a Behaviour Interventionist (BI) in April 2024, a role I found through the PSYC Engagement Newsletter. This experience sparked my passion for Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and supporting individuals on the autism spectrum, leading me to pursue an MA in ABA at Arizona State University this fall to become a Board-certified behavior analyst.
How has your involvement enhanced your experience as a student at SFU?
Being actively involved in student organizations has been one of the most meaningful aspects of my time at SFU. These experiences challenged me to step out of my comfort zone, fostering personal and professional growth.
Beyond skill-building, my involvement has given me a strong sense of purpose and belonging. Through organizing events and creating spaces for connection, I’ve seen firsthand the powerful impact of student-led communities.
By getting involved on campus, what impact do you hope to have on other students?
I hope my involvement encourages other students to step outside their comfort zones and take on new opportunities that align with their interests. Whether it’s joining a club, taking on a leadership position, or exploring career paths through volunteer work, I want to inspire students to make the most of their time at 51ÉçÇøºÚÁÏand build both skills and connections!
