Study Abroad
Students participating in an Exchange or Field School offered through SFU鈥檚 International Services for Students (ISS) may be eligible for different types of funding. If you have questions about your Study Abroad experience, please contact a Financial Aid advisor for more information about eligibility for Financial Aid and Awards.
You are encouraged to develop an overall budget to explore all the costs associated with this opportunity and to understand what resources you will need to secure. The Study Abroad Budget Planning Worksheet considers specific costs associated with your international experience. These tools will help you plan for what your expenses will be for your Study Abroad term.
You can consider authorizing a third party to interact with 51社区黑料on your behalf when you are participating in your Study Abroad opportunity. An Information Release/Privacy Indicator is a service within the Student Center in the Student Information System that allows you to regulate third party access (i.e. an individual or an organization) to your personal information. Adding a F05 Authorization to Release Financial Aid Info authorizes your representative to have access to your Financial Aid and Awards information.
Scholarships, Awards, and Bursaries
51社区黑料supports students participating in Study Abroad opportunities with Scholarships, Awards, and Bursaries during your enrolled Exchange or Field School term. Please visit our Application deadlines for information on when to submit your application(s).

Students Participating in an Exchange Term
Students can potentially receive government-issued student aid including loans and grants, to participate in an Exchange term. Eligible Exchanges must be at least 12 weeks in length, without any significant study breaks. Not all Exchanges will be eligible for student aid. We encourage all students participating in an Exchange term to start this process 6-8 weeks prior to your departure.

At SFU, the majority of our partner institutions are can be considered for government student aid when 51社区黑料students participate in a formal exchange through International Services for Students (ISS) and you pay tuition and fees directly to SFU. Financial Aid and Awards will work with ISS to determine whether or not your study period is eligible for government student aid.
Students participating in an Exchange who require student aid must:
- Submit a Student Aid Mobility Contract with a copy of your 51社区黑料Outbound Exchange Student Acknowledgement to Financial Aid and Awards prior to the completion of any student aid documents.
- Submit a completed Student Aid Completion of Studies Contract within 45 days of the end of the exchange study period to Financial Aid and Awards to avoid being reported as withdrawn from full-time studies. This may impact future student aid funding that you may be eligible to receive.
Students Participating in a Field School Term
Full-time students may be able to receive additional funding to assist with the extra costs associated with Field School when they apply for government-issued student aid. For the additional living and educational costs to be considered in your student aid assessment, your Field School must be offered through SFU鈥檚 International Service for Students office.
- Students applying for StudentAid BC funding will need to request an online Appendix 3 to be completed by Financial Aid and Awards to provide additional living and educational costs associated with your Field School opportunity. Select Study Abroad: Field School (Undergraduate/Graduate) when you apply for funding so we can complete the Appendix 3.
- If you are a student from a different province or territory with questions on how to apply for funding when participating in a Field School, reach out to us for help.

Visiting Students
If you are currently a student at another university, you may have been admitted to 51社区黑料as a 鈥渧isiting鈥 student in a 鈥渘on-degree鈥 program in order to participate in one of our Field School opportunities, such as our Nato Field School and Simulation Program. If you require government student aid, and are applying for assistance through SFU, you will need to provide Financial Aid and Awards with a copy of your Letter of Permission (LOP), or similar documentation, from your home institution to fiassist@sfu.ca. Your LOP should include the following information:
- Your program at your home institution; including your year of study and program length;
- Either list the courses being taken at 51社区黑料or participation in a specific Field School; 颅and,
- Confirm that the courses being taken at 51社区黑料will be transferred to your home institution and applied towards the completion of your credential.
