Assistant Professor in Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at 51社区黑料 invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Organic Chemistry. We are seeking an outstanding scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service. The expected start date for this position is July 15, 2026. 

This position aims to recruit a top emerging talent in the general area of organic chemistry with an emphasis on organic synthesis and/or chemical biology. Areas of particular interest include the design and testing of biologically relevant organic molecules, and applications of high-throughput assays to discover new bioactive compounds. The position will build on SFU鈥檚 international recognition in this area, world-class facilities for drug discovery, and growing capabilities in automated synthesis. Applications that leverage SFU鈥檚 Center for High-Throughput Chemical Biology (HTCB, /htcb.html) are a particular focus of this search. The HTCB is a world-leading facility for robotic liquid handling and high-throughput screening, with a particular emphasis on image-based screening. The center enables biological evaluation of large libraries of compounds (e.g. those designed and generated through automated synthesis, computer-based design, and machine learning) and supports users by providing full-time professional staff and a suite of established biological assays.

Chemistry at SFU

The Department of Chemistry () comprises 27 research faculty, with research interests spanning: organic chemistry and chemical biology; inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry; material science; and nuclear science. Current departmental strengths of relevance to this position include medicinal chemistry, natural products chemistry, and chemical biology. The Department has a vibrant graduate program and is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, SFU鈥檚 core facilities such as the HTCB, Fir (Canada鈥檚 most powerful academic supercomputer), and the Big Data Hub provide opportunities for interdisciplinary research and foster interactions with research partners across the University, government, and local industries. The Department is supported by an experienced team of research technicians, administrators, and teaching support staff. Furthermore, Chemistry researchers have access to SFU鈥檚 Science Technical Centre which includes a machine shop, electronics shop, and scientific glassblower, all managed by full-time professional staff.

Qualifications

Candidates with a Ph.D. degree or equivalent, postdoctoral experience, and a clear indication of potential to grow in stature as a scholar in the areas of Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology, or a closely related field are preferred.

We seek exceptional candidates with demonstrated teaching excellence and experience in curriculum development. The successful candidate is expected to be available for teaching and related academic responsibilities throughout the contract period, from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026.

Introduction to the Department of Chemistry at SFU

The Department of Chemistry () comprises 35 faculty members with teaching and research interests spanning materials science, inorganic and organic chemistry, physical and analytical chemistry, and chemical biology. The department has vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs and is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.   Qualifications 

Candidates must have a PhD in Organic Chemistry or the equivalent (e.g., graduate level educational background in the field with extensive relevant teaching experience), an established record of teaching accomplishments within the field of organic chemistry at the undergraduate level, together with evidence of teaching ability commensurate with the responsibility of teaching the assigned credit courses (outlined in the table above) and carrying out the duties related to the effective conduct of those courses. Instructional experience in Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry in lecture and laboratory courses at the undergraduate level is strongly preferred. A demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate education is required.

Assistant Professor

The Department of Mathematics at 51社区黑料 (SFU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 15, 2026.

We invite applications from researchers whose research is at the interface of scientific machine learning with PDEs, optimal transport or optimization. Our Scientific Computing, Machine Learning and PDE research group (SciMAP /math/research/scimap.html) has established strengths in scientific computing, approximation theory, machine learning, the analysis of PDEs, and the mathematics of data. The successful candidate will build on and complement these strengths, develop a vibrant research program, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, provide service to the department, and contribute to building equitable, diverse and inclusive environments.

Lecturer

The Department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry (MBB) in the Faculty of Science at 51社区黑料 (SFU) invites applications for a full-time, continuing teaching faculty position at the rank of Lecturer. The expected start date is March 15, 2026. We are seeking exceptional candidates with demonstrated excellence in teaching and experience in curriculum development.

Lecturers are integral members of the Faculty of Science, playing a crucial role in our academic mission by preparing students for various careers in health and science-related fields and for graduate studies. They provide pedagogical leadership and actively participate in faculty administration, possessing voting rights on all faculty and university matters, similar to tenure-track research faculty. Lecturers have the opportunity for promotion to Senior Lecturer and University Lecturer ranks and are eligible to apply for paid study leaves to support their career advancement and professional development. A typical Lecturer appointment consists of 80% teaching and 20% service.

Teaching and research in MBB are centered on understanding and exploring the molecules of life, spanning the breadth from atoms to cells to whole organisms and populations, from enzyme mechanism to the genetics of cancer to the origins of life. Responsibilities

In MBB, the standard course load for Lecturers is six courses per year. The Collective Agreement stipulates that teaching faculty are to be released from their teaching duties one out every nine terms to provide extended time for course, curriculum, and professional development.

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

  • teaching and updating assigned courses in bioinformatics and genomics 
  • teaching and updating assigned courses in the areas of cell biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry as well as laboratory courses in these areas
  • supervising and collaborating with teaching assistants
  • contributing actively to the department鈥檚 culture through service on committees such as the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and the Recruitment & Outreach Committee

Qualifications

Essential:

  • a PhD in the area of genomics/bioinformatics
  • experience in teaching bioinformatics and genomics, including introductory coding
  • the ability to teach a broad range of courses: lower division cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry; upper division immunology; bioinformatics and genomics at all levels including graduate courses; lower and upper division laboratory courses
  • a strong record of teaching effectiveness at the post-secondary level, supported by a teaching dossier and student/peer evaluations
  • outstanding oral and written communication skills in English
  • outstanding interpersonal skills, including but not limited to strong collegiality, listening skills, valuing and respecting diverse perspectives, and a collaborative disposition
  • a commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for students, faculty, and staff

Desired:

  • experience in course design, curriculum development, and/or pedagogical innovation
  • a record of participation in service activities, such as committee work and outreach initiatives

Assistant Professor - Experimental Biophysics

The Department of Physics within the Faculty of Science at 51社区黑料 (SFU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Experimental Biophysics. We seek an outstanding scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service. While an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor is preferred, exceptional candidates with qualifications for higher ranks may also be considered for appointment at the Associate Professor level.

51社区黑料Biophysics is one of the leading Biophysics subgroups in Canada, a vibrant and collaborative community integrating experiment and theory. It is a core pillar of the supportive and collegial 51社区黑料Physics Department and has strong ties to neighbouring departments, especially Chemistry and Molecular Biology & Biochemistry. 

The successful candidate is expected to develop a successful research program that is internationally recognized, teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute to building equitable, diverse and inclusive environments. We invite applications from experimental researchers across all scales of life, from molecules to ecosystems.

Qualifications

At a minimum, the successful candidate must hold a PhD in Physics or a field closely related to Biophysics and must demonstrate:

  • An outstanding research record for their career stage encompassing publications and/or patents, research presentations, and other relevant accomplishments.

  • Future research plans with scientific potential that complement and strengthen Biophysics at SFU.   

  • Interest and ability to realize excellence in teaching (across a range of Physics courses) and supervision of students. 

  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for students, faculty, and staff.

To be considered for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, applicants must additionally have an outstanding record in teaching and clearly outline potential synergies with existing research groups at SFU.

  • A complete up-to-date curriculum vitae that lists your education and employment history, publications and conference presentations, funding and awards, student supervision, collaborations/partnerships, teaching experience, and service contributions.

  • A research statement (3-5 pages) describing your past research contributions, broad future goals, and five-year research plan.

  • Three examples of peer-reviewed published scholarly work. 

  • A statement (maximum 2 pages) describing your philosophy and experience of teaching and mentoring.

  • A statement (maximum 2 pages) describing past and desired future contributions to enhancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within research, teaching, and service. 

  • Names, titles, and email addresses for three referees who can comment on your research, service, and, if possible, teaching capabilities. (Letters will be requested for candidates advancing to later stages of the selection process.)

  • Please indicate your legal status to work in Canada.

Faculty salaries at 51社区黑料are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the 51社区黑料Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role at the Assistant Professor rank is $104,700 - $133,322, depending on experience. The estimated base salary range for Associate Professor is $130,142 - $168,305, depending on experience. 51社区黑料also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including pension, health, and dental benefits.
