Program Overview

What is the French Cohort Program (FCP)?

It's a multidisciplinary program, taught primarily in French, that includes an exchange program to Quebec or Europe and leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree with the following program options:

  • Political Science Major + French and Francophone Studies Minor
  • French and Francophone Studies Major + Political Science Extended Minor
  • Double Major in Political Science + French and Francophone Studies

FCP students progress through a carefully structured sequence of courses as a group, creating a strong sense of community and academic support. Many of these courses are cohort-specific and taught in French, while some required and elective courses are delivered in English to ensure a well-rounded academic experience.

The majority of FCP courses offered by the Department of Political Science are taught in French and explore topics such as diplomacy, language and politics, global governance, public policy, and political philosophy. French courses, offered through the Department of French, focus on language, linguistics, and the rich diversity of francophone literatures and cultures. In addition, students take mandatory courses in history and Indigenous studies—essential for developing a deeper understanding of Canada’s past, present, and future.

Is this program for you?

Are you passionate about social sciences and fluent in French?

The French Cohort Program (FCP) is designed for students with intermediate to advanced French skills, often from French immersion or Francophone high schools—looking for a dynamic, full-time undergraduate experience.

Launching each fall, the FCP offers an immersive bilingual experience, with 65–80% of courses taught in French—ideal for students eager to strengthen their knowledge and skills in both of Canada’s official languages.

What will you learn?

  • A deep understanding of politics in Canada and globally
  • The ability to analyze political movements, policies, and issues
  • Strong critical thinking and logical reasoning skills
  • Communicating clearly, both in presenting data and conveying ideas
  • A solid foundation in historical perspectives
  • Professional fluency in both French and English

The FCP, a bilingual Bachelor’s program, was instrumental in my life. It gave shape to my early path, and helped lead me to where I am today – still living my life in both languages with no intention of ever going back. Bilingual education does far more than teach a language. It expands your worldview, makes you adaptable, and opens you to opportunities that you might not consider or be considered for otherwise. I’m so grateful for the impact this program has had on my life.
