According to UN estimates, there are 1.2 billion people without regular access to electricity grids. A Government of Canada (NRCAN, 2011) reports 251 remote communities that primarily rely on diesel, of which there are some 80 in British Columbia. Many of these communities are Indigenous. Diesel is expensive and has negative impacts on the environment and health.
