Undergraduate students’ political science papers published in Student Learning Commons academic writing journal
As winners of the 2024 Student Learning Commons Undergraduate Writing Contest (SLC-UWC), Aryan Sharifi and Sheridan Nix, who are currently in their second year, were recently published in the SLC-UWC Journal. We are pleased to announce that both winning papers were written for political science courses.
Written for professor Aaron Hoffman鈥檚 course, POL 141: International Relations, Sharifi鈥檚 paper 鈥榃ar鈥檚 End? Realist, Liberal and Constructivist Perspectives on the Decline-of-War Thesis鈥 explores the 鈥渄ecline-of-war thesis鈥 and argues that while realism rejects the thesis due to the persistent nature of power struggles between states, liberalism and constructivism support it.
Psychology student Sheridan Nix wrote her paper for senior lecturer Clare McGovern's POL 151: Law and Justice course. Her paper, 鈥楢n Argument for Policymaking鈥, considers how judges decide controversial cases. She argues that in a fast-changing society like Canada, judges should consider policy, and not simply legal doctrine alone.
The SLC-UWC Journal is an annual compilation of the past year鈥檚 contest winners and honourable mentions. The journal provides a platform for undergraduate students to share their papers with a broader audience and improve their academic writing skills.
The award-winning papers listed above are available to our faculty members and students as valuable resources for teaching and academic writing. To access them for future reference, please visit:
