REM 211 Introduction to Applied Biology
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: September 9 to December 23, 2026
Lectures: Thursday, 10:30 pm to 12:20 pm
Salary: $5,902.00 for 2 weekly contact hours
Course Description:
Balancing the needs of people and other components of nature is among the foremost challenges of our time. Understanding key processes that structure nature across space and through time can help inform this challenge. Introduces students to the foundational concepts of applied ecology motivated by real-world management and conservation problems.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree, PhD preferred, ABD candidates may be considered.
  • Knowledge of ecological theory and how it is applied in management and conservation decision-making.
  • Hands-on skills in experimental design and introductory frequentist statistics.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (e.g., student reviews, other references).

REM 221 Systems Thinking and the Environment
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: September 9 to December 23, 2026
Lectures: Tuesday, 12:30 pm to 2:20 pm
Salary: $5,902.00 for 2 weekly contact hours
Course Description:
Introduces systems thinking in the context of environmental and sustainability challenges using system archetypes and system dynamics theory. Analytical and modeling techniques are applied to understand and project systems complexity. Emphasis is placed on using systems thinking concepts to finding solutions in a complex world.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree, PhD preferred; ABD candidates may be considered.
  • Experience applying or teaching systems thinking concepts within environmental or other contexts.
  • Familiar with systems thinking modelling and communication tools.
  • Experience with experiential and/or case-based learning preferred.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (e.g., student reviews, other references).

REM 357 Planning for Sustainable Food Systems
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: September 9 to December 23, 2026
Lectures: Tuesday, 4:30 pm to 6:20 pm
Salary: $5,902.00 for 2 weekly contact hours
Course Description:
Provides students with the tools to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current food system and will encourage them to critically analyze diverse solutions from both the global South and global North to build a more sustainable food system. Students will work collaboratively with the instructor to examine diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to food sustainability and strengthen their problem-solving skills.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree, PhD preferred; ABD candidates may be considered.
  • nowledge of the following topics: 
    o Food systems,
    o Food system planning,
    o Agroecology,
    o Agriculture and the role of responsible technologies,
    o Food justice, food sovereignty, and food security,
    o Understanding of both local and international food systems-related issues and the role of international institutions.
  • Relevant experience in teaching / research related to food studies, agri-food, and food system planning;
  • Experience with experiential and /or case-based learning preferred.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (i.e., student reviews, other references).

REM 471 Forest Ecosystems and Management
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: September 9 to December 23, 2026
Lectures: Wednesday and Friday: 10:30 am to 12:20 pm
Salary: $9,534.00 for 4 weekly contact hours
Course Description:
Forests are critical components of the earth system and provide diverse ecological, economic, social, and cultural services. They are also a source of conflict regarding their conservation and use. Students will begin by examining the ecological characteristics of forest ecosystems and disturbances pertinent to North America. This knowledge will then be applied to evaluate tools of forest management for a variety of goals and objectives. The final section of the course will examine challenges and opportunities in the management of British Columbia鈥檚 forested ecosystems, including Indigenous Protected Conservation Areas, carbon accounting, and wildfire management. 

Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in forestry, resource management, ecology, or related fields, with a relevant research focus; PhD is preferred, ABD candidates and applicants with a master鈥檚 and significant experience may be considered. 
  • Experience with or knowledge of a broad range of topics in forest management (e.g. disturbance ecology, Indigenous relations, forestry operations, policy, planning) will be advantageous.
  • Experience with experiential and /or case-based learning preferred.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (i.e., student reviews, other references).

PLAN 400 Policy Analysis for Social and Environmental Change
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: September 9 to December 23, 2026
Lectures: Wednesday and Friday, 10:30 am to 12:20 pm
Salary: $9,534.00 for 4 weekly contact hours
Course Description:
Provides an advanced evaluation of public policy, policy analysis, and policy change, focusing on problems in urban and regional planning and resource and environmental management.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree, PhD preferred, ABD candidates may be considered.
  • Knowledge of policy, planning, and decision-making frameworks and processes at an applied and academic level.
  • Knowledge of current Canadian provincial, federal, and Indigenous policy-making, policy issues, and governance modes.
  • Experience analysing environmental and social issues to create policy recommendations.
  • Experience structing, writing, and delivering policy briefs.
  • In-depth knowledge of at least one of the following topics: Indigenous governance, fisheries, forestry, water management, sustainable energy and transportation, food systems, urban environmental management and resilience, or collaborative planning and decision-making.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (e.g., student reviews, other references).

PLAN 408 Environmental Planning
Location: Burnaby Campus
Appointment Dates: September 9 to December 23, 2026
Lectures: Wednesday and Friday, 2:30 pm to 4:20 pm
Salary: $9,534.00 for 4 weekly contact hours
Course Description:
Examines the interaction of human settlements and the natural environment in both urban and regional settings. Students gain an understanding of the decisions, policies, and plans that have profound impacts on the health and integrity of social and ecological systems. Topics may include planning for nature-based solutions, environmental justice, and resilience.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree, PhD preferred; ABD candidates may be considered.
  • Knowledge of the following topics:
    • The role of planning/planners in responding to different environmental issues or concerns.
    • The local context of environmental planning, including local policy and legislation.
    • The complexities and social dimensions of environmental planning.
    • The natural hazards, climate risks, and natural resources, etc. of British Columbia.
  • Relevant teaching or research experience related to environmental planning, including planning for different resources, hazards, and natural assets.
  • Professional experience in environmental planning is as asset.
  • Experience with experiential and /or case-based learning preferred.
  • Evidence of teaching experience and excellence (i.e., student reviews, other references).
