Wolfgang Haider Memorial Book Award

The Wolfgang Haider Memorial Book Award is given out to recognize a highly successful graduating student in REM who has consistently exhibited a reputation for mentoring and contributing towards an improved student experience, both academically and socially, and perhaps also very engaged and involved with organizations or groups.

Congratulations to the June 2026 Award recipients!

Ellen Watters, Bachelor of Environment, REM Major Planning Stream

Ellen Watters convocated in October 2025 and is currently in a planner position for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation.   During her time at SFU, Ellen demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and commitment to equity programs as the Food Justice Facilitator and Board of Director for the Embark Learning Garden. At Embark Sustainability Society, her commitment to learning and growing with her team resulted in the implementation of Nourishing Perspectives, a Food Justice Exhibition event. Within this event, Ellen and her team created a space for 5 student artists to share their experiences and relationships to food justice and food (in)security. The event also allowed about 35 student attendees to listen and learn from food justice advocates in the community and engage with them. In the summer of 2024, she also joined an international field school program to Tanzania where she supported a Maasai cultural preservation project. In recognition of her engagement in various activities, she also received the Faculty of Environment Changemaker Award.

Mieke Boecker, Masters, Resource Management (Planning)

Mieke Boecker graduated REM with her MRM in Planning in June 2026. Her research explored how urban forest management plans in BC include considerations of established and emerging dimensions of equity. During her time in REM, Mieke was actively involved in student life, taking on the roles of EDI liaison and secretary for REMSU (REM Student Union) and first-year events coordinator and subsequently co-president for REPSA (REM Planning Students鈥 Association), allowing her to contribute to the social fabric of the program and communicate student feedback to faculty and staff. As the PIBC student representative for SFU, Mieke co-organized a social for students and planning professionals, wrote a Planning West article that highlighted on-the-ground experiences of MRM students as they worked with a community partner, and organized a joint UBC and 51社区黑料student-led presentation speed session at the 2025 PIBC conference in Vancouver. In her role as teaching assistant, Mieke strived to create a supportive learning environment for undergraduate students that encouraged critical and creative thinking as they confronted diverse socio-ecological topics.

2025

Alyna De Guzman, BEnv, REM Major Planning Stream

Alyna De Guzman demonstrated exceptional leadership during her time at SFU. Alyna carved a co-op journey serving as a Climate Change Intern for the BC Assembly of First Nations where she supported First Nations-led climate action, and as a team member in BC Housing鈥檚 People, Plants, and Homes Program where she helped communities around the Lower Mainland grow their own food and get access to organic produce. In her final year, Alyna stepped into the Food Justice Coordinator role at Embark Sustainability Society, where she organized monthly community kitchens for students and events centered on food literacy, food security, and Indigenous food sovereignty. For her last semester, she joined the Tanzania Climate Resilient Food Systems and Sustainable Development field school program at Aga Khan University and worked with a Maasai community in Makuyuni to create photographic archives for their growing cultural centre.

Jordyn Carss, Masters, Resource Management (Planning)

Jordyn Carss graduated REM with her MRM in Planning in June 2025. She was a member of the Food Systems Lab and partnered with the City of Prince Rupert to conduct a baseline food systems assessment involving spatial analysis and community engagement. She conducted her analysis through a social-ecological resilience lens to develop recommendations for Prince Rupert that enhance the adaptability of the food system, recognize the interconnectedness of ecological health and social-wellbeing, and promote equitable and sustainable practices rooted in local knowledge. During her time in REM, she was an events co-coordinator for REMSU (REM Student Union) and helped organize a camping trip, winter social, and spring formal that brought master鈥檚 and PhD students together to laugh, eat good food, and make connections. Since graduating, Jordyn has returned to environmental consulting and is getting involved in food systems and community planning projects for several BC First Nations.

2024

Paige Hunter, BEnv, REM Honours

Paige Hunter has participated in a diversity of extra-curricular activities focused on climate action, which demonstrates her outstanding qualities of character and devotion to both the university and making positive social and environmental change globally. Not only was she on the Dean鈥檚 Honour Roll for seven terms in the REM Honours program, she was also named as one of Canada鈥檚 Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25. Paige was one of the first student delegates chosen to represent the university at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt where she connected the climate education work being done at 51社区黑料with global climate change education programs. As an active member of 51社区黑料350 (a student-led climate activism club), she developed climate education courses for students, staff, and faculty at SFU.

Mahroo Shahbaz, BEnv, Sustainable Business Joint Major

Mahroo Shahbaz is one of REM鈥檚 top undergraduate scholars who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to inclusion, democracy, and reconciliation by ensuring that 鈥渆very person has a voice that is heard.鈥 Mahroo has consistently achieved high academic standing throughout her Sustainable Business Joint Major program. She has been on the Dean's honour roll for 6 terms throughout her studies and has been a leader in sustainability and justice at 51社区黑料and beyond. As a past member of Embark Sustainability Society, she was actively involved in supporting local food systems and combating climate change, while addressing social and economic inequities rooted in racism, capitalism, and colonialism.

 

Owen Wilson, Masters, Resource Management (Planning)

Owen Wilson graduated with his MRM Planning in April of 2024. His research was an investigation of the role of landowners in Indigenous heritage conservation, filling a critical policy gap in the literature. During his time in REM, Owen was a First Year Representative for both REMSU (REM鈥檚 Student Union) and REPSA (the REM Planning Students鈥 Association) where he helped keep students informed about upcoming events and activities, and share the cohort鈥檚 questions, comments, and concerns with each student union at monthly meetings. He also organized monthly coffee socials for REM, which formed an important point of connection for students returning to campus post-Covid. In April 2023, Owen was elected President for REMSU where he took responsibility for organizing and running the meetings as well as providing oversight on the budget. He liaised with both REM staff and faculty as well as the GSS, ensuring information was communicated to these groups and back to students.
